description
Italian self catering apartments in Perugia_villaThe apartments are situated within a historic farmhouse dating back to the 1400s, built on Colle Giorgio, a hill just outside Perugia. Located in open countryside, but a mere stone's throw from the historic centre of the city, it was converted into a family villa in the 1970s. During 2001-2002, the building has once again been refurbished and remodelled into three sumptious apartments, which are intended for families wishing to spend brief holiday periods in Umbria.

This is not your average farm holiday accommodation, nor an uninspiring flat, but a luxurious apartment in a villa in which the owners themselves reside, amid elegance, comfort and tradition, and accompanied by warm, friendly, family hospitality. This balance is beautifully achieved in apartments furnished with antiques and decorated with frescoes depicting the paintings of the most celebrated Umbrian painters of all time, in accordance with Umbrian tradition.

Italian self catering apartments in Perugia_gardentableThe owners live in the main villa (an adjacent wing of the villa), a guarantee of a warm, friendly Italian welcome. Their hospitality will ensure: help with all your needs, suggestions for sight-seeing and cultural tours of the most interesting Umbrian towns, (as well as Rome and Florence, a mere one-and-a-half hours drive from Perugia).

The owners will also be delighted to provide any information required for guided tours with the best tour guides in Umbria. We will also be delighted to help you for personal shopping or cooking lessons with a celebrated chef. We can also help arrange ceramics art-school or a rental car in Perugia town.

We are glad to try to grant every special request of our guests. We are also glad to suggest you the best restaurants, pizzeria and trattoria (typical Italian restaurants) that have special care and special price reductions for our guests. We would also like to mention that Umbria is internationally famous for the quality of its wines and olive oil, both of which have been produced and exported for centuries. Visits to wineries and oil mills can also be recommended, so that guests can experience the ancient roots of the land of Umbria.

The owners also guarantee that the kitchens will be supplied with everything needed for a hearty breakfast for the first morning of the stay.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
I am part of the administrative Council of the First District of the town of Perugia. Perugia is divided into 13 districts (called Circoscrizioni). I am one of the 15 councillors of the First Circoscrizione. I was elected democratically by the people in the area. This is a totally voluntary commitment and without any remuneration. The Council annually gives contributions to the integration of legal immigrants. The Council manages some housing occupied by families less fortunate. The Council promotes the recovery of old buildings and the maintenance and control of green areas and forests. The Board is also for monitoring compliance with the legislation and the urban environment throughout the area.

My family and I support charity: each year we give 200 Euro to the Catholic Church for "Caritas" (Catholic humanitarian organization); Euro 250 to the "Comitato per la vita Daniele Chianelli" (Perugia Association Foundation for research and treatment of leukemia and cancer of children), Euro 200 to the AIRC "Associazione Italiana per la ricerca sul Cancro" (Italian Association for Research on Cancer). Finally, usually once a year we advertise among our friends and on our walls a collection of used clothes and toys for families less fortunate in our area.

We use eco cleaning products in our villa. We use them to wash linens, towels and sheets of our guests weekly. We don't provide products (such as food or soap) to our guests. If they ask I'm always happy to give them suggestions for the best eco cleaning products they can find in Perugia. The name of the products that we use is ECO LAND. We use it for the washing-machine, dish-washer and hand wash liquid soap. The Eco Land products don't have any phosphates, enzymes, chlorine or dyes. It contains surfactants of plant origin and essential oil of orange and violet. They are made from the natural company kigroup.

We cultivate our garden without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers. We recycle at home and do a separate collection for metal, plastic, glass, paper, medicines and batteries. Also we encourage our guests to do the same: At only 300/400 meters from the villa there is the point of separate collection of the area. We recommend always our guests to divide metal, plastic, glass and paper and bring everything to this collection point. I always work at home to reduce pollution. I use only recycled paper and also recycle ink cartridge for the printer. I speak a lot with our Guests. I'm happy to provide suggestions and I always try to grant any requests.

Throughout the sewage system of the villa is a new system to minimise the negative impacts on nature; the natural "fitodepurazione". At the end of the garden and underground we have a system that uses particular plants in the garden to purify the sewage system before entering all the water into the local pipelines. At the end of this natural process water could even be drunk! We preferred not to asphalt the road of 150 metres leading to the villa, and also the parking inside the property. This is to respect nature and not ruin the impact of the natural area.

As the villa is a luxury family vacation rental managed by me and my family, we don't have other people in our staff ...only my family. As self catering vacation rental (no food, no restaurant... each apt. has a fully equipped kitchen) we provide a welcome basket at the arrival with local food and beverage for the first evening and morning: typical Umbria olive oil, spaghetti, tomato sauce, Umbria red wine, bread, milk, sugar, tea, coffee, Cornflakes, butter, infusion, biscuits, water, orange juice and jam. I'm always happy to give suggestions about our typical food, wine and wine tours, restaurants and trattoria (typical Italian restaurant). We buy this food directly and always in a typical family-owned Perugia food store close to the Villa.

We use always the same local workers: our plumbers, electricians, painters, blacksmith, gardeners and carpenters are all artisans of Perugia! We don't like big companies and we always prefer to have the same Perugia artisans.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
