description
Kandy boutique hotel in Sri Lanka
Built over 100 years ago for the manager of a major tea estate, this Kandy hotel preserves the character and tranquility of colonial days. A very small boutique hotel, which is more like staying in a private house – there is no formal “reception”; meals are generally by arrangement; no formal hours for anything. The countryside is extremely attractive; the climate is very good being at sufficient altitude for cool air, and yet still retaining hot sun. Extensive walks are available within the hotel's land, and many further a field.
The hotel is close to the geographic centre of Sri Lanka Colombo and the international airport is 3 hours away and the World Heritage city of Kandy with its renowned botanical gardens and other tourist attractions is 30 minutes drive.
The Cultural Triangle to the north is only 2 hours away making the hotel an excellent base from which to explore the island. At 2,400 feet the hotel combines the best of Sri Lanka's weather. The sun in the day is hot, while the evenings and nights are relatively cool without the stickiness of the coast, nor the distinct chill of the hill country. The beautiful gardens are full of interesting flowers, butterflies and birds including the Sri Lankan Hanging Parrot, Golden Oriole, Sunbirds and the Plum Headed Parakeet. The garden also provides vegetables and fruit for the house. The countryside is crossed by many paths and tea estate roads, making walking and biking easy and delightful.
special things to do and see here
The hotel is rural, but there is fascinating wildlife; excellent walks on many local paths and trails; mountain bicycling (we supply); local tours, either with our driver or from outside. Within the hotel we have an excellent swimming pool; croquet; a large library; televisions that can receive international news; a variety of games etc. Walking and Cycling: The area is a paradise for either walking or mountain bicycling. There is a huge range of paths/tracks roads in very beautiful country.
rooms, food and facilities
The main house has a large sitting room furnished with antiques, a dining room which seats 12 and a study where you can watch international news via satellite TV. There are 2 guest bedrooms, one double and one twin, both with their own bathrooms. The twin bedroom has an additional bedroom leading off it with a single bed.The Valley house is near the swimming pool, and some thirty yards away from the main house. It has spectacular views and has three generous bedrooms, two double and a twin, the double bedrooms have their own bathrooms whilst the twin has a shower. A great advantage is the huge veranda which is a natural place to sit and read. Valley house guests can choose to have their meals here.
The swimming pool is a wonderful vantage point from which to gaze at the view 20 miles down the valley. The pool is fed from our own borehole and we use very little in the way of chemicals, greatly enhancing the pleasure of swimming. This is our home when in Sri Lanka so the house is furnished in a relaxed 'country house' style. There are books and magazines for guests to read, music to play and games and cards are available too.Eating is informal, and is either in an open sided pavilion; the large veranda, or, if the weather is poor in a large dining room. Local alcohol is included with meals, but otherwise the hotel has no alcohol licence. There is an excellent swimming pool with lovely water with very few chemicals. Laundry can be done for guests. There is WiFi access.
Family friendly: We are happy to have children, as long as they are well behaved and do not disturb other guests.
Pet friendly: We have two dogs who are normally very keen to go on walks with guests. There is no reason why a visiting dog would not be made welcome.
how to find our Kandy boutique hotel in Sri Lanka
We are approximately 7 miles from both Peredinya and Gampola railway stations. We can also arrange for guests to be picked up at the international airport, or elsewhere. how this holiday makes a difference
|
Both the families of the hotel's owners have been in India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon) for five generations, and we seek to return something to this beautiful part of the world. The hotel is very different to the normal concept of a hotel and we like to feel that guests staying there see it much more as staying in a private house with a friend rather than a commercial exercise. The hotel is well established in the local community, and exists well with its neighbours.
It is still a very productive Tea Estate, producing organic green tea. Within the constraints that exist, the hotel is a very responsible member of the local community in terms of totally organic food production (and of course the tea). Good ecological practises; best employment practices etc. We try to run the hotel in as totally a responsible fashion as possible. In particular: We have a total staff of 14, 3 are from outside the area, but others recruited from within the area and trained by ourselves. We buy as much as we can of our food from immediately local sources, and we contribute towards a variety of local causes, such as the Buddhist school near us. We try to train our staff as well as we can, both at the hotel and on short external training courses. We have no rubbish collection here, and therefore, for our own interests, strive to prevent waste. In particular we have a scheme to pay locals small amounts to take away bottles that cannot be recycled for their use. We have excellent supplies of water, both from our own spring and our own bore hole, but the bore hole is only used when needed. Electricity is so expensive in Sri Lanka that we do everything possible to minimise consumption without unconvincing guests. All heating for water is done with solar heating, and electricity only used for lighting; refrigeration etc. We have an abundance of wild life, both in terms of animals and birds, which we encourage and feed where appropriate, for the benefit of guests. All our own gardening practices are organic. For building, everything we use is locally sourced in Sri Lanka. We are significant supporters of Kacpaw, a nearby charity which sterilises and then re-houses village dogs. We try to make our staff as aware as possible of the importance to adhering to these general practices. It is very rare that we purchase anything from outside Sri Lanka, simply because of the costs. Although most guests eat here, when they would like a change we advise on a choice of restaurants which we feel are sympathetic with our general standards. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
