The mezzanine area can be used as a fourth bedroom (additional mattress and fan provided). The kitchen is equipped with a large gas cooker, a 426 litre fridge/freezer and has spacious work-top areas plus all the necessary kitchen equipment for cooking and dining.

The beach house is superbly located on Patacho beach which forms part of the Coral Coast; an area of natural preservation in the Northeast of Brazil.
special things to do and see here
The house is located 2km from the historic town of Porta de Pedras where one can find convenience stores, fishmonger, baker, butcher, chemist, post office and Bradesco bank, plus local restaurants like Marinete which has delicious local favourites including baby lobster in coconut milk.

Other delightful beaches close-by include Toque, Laje and Barra de Sao Miguel. Boat rides can be arranged on the Tatuamunha river to see the peixie-boi or sea-cow (Trichecus manatus in Latin) which forms part of a preservation project run by the Brazilian government.

Just 300 metres from the house is a delightful French restaurant which welcomes a handful of guests each evening into its charming surroundings. Other notable restaurants in the area include Amendoeira and Toque. For a simple lunch on the beach then there isn't a better option than the local restaurant Tibiro in Barra Sao Miguel.

The renowned beach, Japaratinga, is located 20 minutes by car and offers further options including boat trips and buggy rides.

how this holiday makes a difference
Patacho beach is located in an area of nature preservation on a semi-deserted beach. It is a chance to step completely outside the regular tourist trail and enjoy tradition beach life in Brazil. The house is beach-fronted but sufficiently set back from the beach so that looking from the sea all you see is coconuts trees, leaving the view unspoiled. We want to maintain nature beauty of the area as much as possible this includes replanting local restinga (beach vegetation) to protect the coastline.

The house has been designed by Recife-based architects to take full advantage of the nature breeze and shade to create a home which has a low impact on the local environment. A special designed roof and use of open-clay bricks make it a unique project. Consequently there is only air-con in one room (and fans in the others) because for most of the year you just do not need it. The property was built by local builders. All the doors and furniture were hand-made by a local carpenter. Even the floor tiles are hand-made. We have a small allotment to grow our own vegetables.

Our two staff, Maria Helena and Laudemir, grew up in the nearby historic town of Porto de Pedras. The work we can provide for them is vital as they are few options in this region. By working with the closely we have been able to give them new skills and they have been able to help us by produce locally from fishermen and farmers. It has been a two-way learning process. Maria Helena even raises her own chickens and pigs (all the organic waste from the house goes straight to the pigs).

10% of all the income on the house goes directly to the NGO Ruas & Pracas who work with street children in the city. The money is used to run workshops to help develop skills. The owners of the beach house have been working with Ruas & Pracas for over 3 years and have raised over £5000.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
