introduction to Cancun luxury beach resort in Mexico, Banyan Tree Mayakoba

A harmonious blend of nature and luxury, the new 5 star hotel in Riviera Maya - Banyan Tree Mayakoba takes luxury resort living in the city of Playa del Carmen, Cancun to new heights with the first all-pool villa resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

The epitome of luxury resort living, Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts brings Asian hospitality to the beautiful development of Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, complete with pool villas offering premium seclusion and an expansive spa complex with the introduction of the award-winning Mayakoba Spa.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba_treeTake the plunge into the world’s second largest coral reef in eco-haven Mayakoba. Tee off at the Greg Norman 18-hole championship golf course in Riviera Maya, Mayakoba – El Camaleon Golf Course, which hosts the world’s first PGA tour outside of Canada and USA. Rejuvenate your senses in the award-winning Spa.

Epicurean cuisines and a host of luxurious offerings, all within 9 kilometres of crystal freshwater lagoons leading to the Caribbean Sea, await the discerning traveller in this resort.

special things to do and see here
El Camaleon Golf Course: El Camaleón course is Greg Norman’s first Mexican course design and the first course to ever host the PGA TOUR in Mexico, annually hosting the Mayakoba Golf Classic, Riviera Maya – Cancun every February. As well, El Camaleón is only the second golf course in Mexico to be certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, one of the World’s leading environmental certifications. Audubon’s stringent program includes environmental planning, wildlife, and habitat management, water conservation, chemical use reduction, as well as safety and water quality management.

While each hole shines with its own particular magic, it’s the par 3s that already are earning the loudest raves. The 7th and 15th holes play right to the edge of the Caribbean Sea with the sand and the spray punctuating the breeze. In the distance is one of the world's largest coral reefs and the island of Cozumel. The 10th is another short hole that is long on memories. The figure eight green is lined with drama. A shot too long or to the right drops deep into the crystal waters of the canal.

While the course is a standout, the surrounding golf amenities are equally as impressive. The contemporary, copper-topped clubhouse is a full service facility that rises above the 18th green. The adjoining practice facilities are among the best in Mexico and include a double-ended, 350-yard driving range, a 20,000 sq. ft. short game area with putting and chipping greens. Professional golf instruction is also available.

how this holiday makes a difference
As a socially responsible business, Banyan Tree was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. With the call to arms of embracing the environment and empowering the people, we seek to continue being an agent of social and economic development through responsible tourism. Our triple bottom line (economy, society and environment) help direct our sustainable development by inspiring associates, guests, and partners to take a wider consideration encompassing a long term view when making business decisions.

    Environment
Since its founding, Banyan Tree has sought to protect the natural environment. The importance of safeguarding the environment is central within our goal of sharing the original beauty of any location with guests and friends. This includes ensuring each resort fits into the local setting in a sensitive, meaningful manner.

In 2007, Banyan Tree launched a group wide effort to monitor and systematically reduce the carbon emissions from its resorts. While much of this effort was more internally focused to fine tune and enhance the overall environmental management strategy, this effort has lead to a programme launching in 2008 to reduce energy and water consumption by each resort while enhancing waste management practices at each location. The overall goal is to reduce consumption and carbon emissions by 10% every year from 2006 levels between 2008 and 2010.

Formalised in the last part of 2007, the group environmental management strategy requires each resort to have environmental management officers specifically to monitor power consumption, water consumption and waste production and reduce consumption by at least 10% every year.

    Community
With the mandate of empowering people, Banyan Tree is quick to recognise the necessity of building community capacity, in every location that we are in. As an agent of social and economic development, we realise the potential of tourism to hire from the local workforce, giving training and marketable skills to raise the overall level of community prosperity.

Sustaining village development, preserving and promoting traditional cultures and crafts are part of Banyan Tree Gallery’s business ethos as a socially responsible tourism retailer. Committed to showcasing and supporting community-friendly and eco-friendly products and projects, we have cultivated a wide network of over 40 village producers and project partners around the region.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
