introduction to Bali beach resort, Waka Shorea Resort

Far from the stress of city living, this resort is a tropical island retreat that blissfully reminds us of nature as it fills the senses with its soft breeze and gentle waters, swaying palm trees, twittering birds, and enchanting evenings.

Bali Barat is Bali’s most important National Park with unspoiled white sand and coral/shell beaches, crystal clear waters, living coral, and Menjangan Island where you’ll find one of the most spectacular underwater environments in Indonesia (bring reef walkers or sandshoes).

The resort nestles on a protective peninsula only a twenty minutes boat ride from the mainland, and is the only resort permitted on the parks peninsula. Fourteen lanais and two villas uniquely designed to exist in harmony with the landscape. Facilities include a restaurant at the waters edge, a health spa with massage and beauty treatments, an in ground fresh water pool, a comprehensive range of activities tailored to the area, nature walks and quiet picnics on deserted beaches bliss for the nature lover.

In the dry season - Bali winter - the flora is quite dry and the area is not green or lush but very stark and wild and quite strongly beautiful and primal (April – October). In the summer months however it rains occasionally and the area is lush and very sub-tropical (November – March).
special things to do and see here
Spa and MassageWaka Sutra Spa: A traditional Balinese massage performed by gifted hands is a 'must do' for any visitor to the island of the Gods. Indulge in a range of massages and Balinese health and rejuvenation treatments. There is also a ground in freshwater pool.

Watersports: The resort includes a comprehensive range of activities tailored to the area's clear waters, living coral, and Menjangan Island where you’ll find one of the most spectacular underwater environments in Indonesia, including: Free one hour snorkelling activities off the jetty, diving centre & dive off Menjangan Island at extra cost, sea kayaking, sun rise boating. Hobby cat on request.

Sailing and watersportsNature treks and excursions: Discover a range of nature treks seeking native deer and the silver leaf monkey and sometimes the black long tail monkey. It is also not surprising that Bali is called the island of the thousand temples. Everywhere you see a temple. There are so many temples that the Government does not bother to count them. There are small temples, very small temples with only a very few shrines; there are large temples, very large temples with more than 50 shrines, such as the Temple of Besakih, the mother temple of Bali. There are even lonely shrines on the oddest places where one does not expect them at all. Pulaki temple and Pemuteran temple tour trekking to the park.

how this holiday makes a difference
    Environment
During low season we turn off our generator when our guests do activities at the beaches or Menjangan Island, and we always inform our guests of this. We always inform our guests of the water condition at the resort during our check-in procedure. We have a limited water supply since we import our water from the mainland with a pipe system. We share water with the National Park office and use water for the shower and the kitchen only. We use recycled paper for any office enquiry. We use an EM system with a septic tank we provided. The waste water is recycled so we can use it for our garden. We do not use any chemical products to clean rooms.

We support coral conservation. Before the resort was set-up at Tanjung Kotal peninsula, along 7 kilometers of the shore coral was broken and some fishermen used to come with dynamite and poison. We invited a person who knew about coral to advise us and we started a conservation project to make a coral come back. Action has been taken including putting the coconut leaf in the rock, and slowly we have seen results. We maintain the coral and do not allow fishing in that area. After five years we can now see that the coral is growing well and many fish have come back. Now our guests can do snorkeling and enjoyed the coral. To keep the coral healthy our staff have a program to remove starfish from this area as we know that starfish is an enemy of the coral.

We are working together with National Park officer to train our staff about code of conduct in the National Park, we have a monthly training program and also we are working together with WWF for coral conservation. We inform our guests of the code of conduct in the National park which lets them know what they can do and what not to do during their stay here. We also provide a booklet with any detailed information about the National Park in the rooms.

    Community
The resort is committed to increasing the standard living of local people. 100% of our workers are from nearest village. The accommodation is a boutique resort with a Balinese concept. Most of our furniture is from wood with Balinese architecture we purchased from Denpasar and a local art worker. Any food including fish, chicken and any kind of vegetables we purchase are from the local market. We advise guests to visit the local village where they can buy some art work or souvenirs made from Coconut.

We are committed to working closely with the nearest village, we support some children who study at Elementary School. We give scholarships for some of the children and we continue this program until they finish their studies. We started this in 2000. We also donate towards building some temples in the area.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
