how this holiday makes a difference
    Environment:
We reduce waste by doing our own composting. We conserve our water by using low flush toilet cisterns and water saving shower fixtures. Electricity is conserved by using mostly energy saving bulbs. On site we have 9 tortoises in a natural setting. They are fed with scraps of fruit and vegetables from the hotel kitchen. They are a great attraction for all our guests especially the youngsters. Our compost which is used for our flora and fauna and herb garden are part of our gardening practices. Our cleaning products are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

Our establishment is Green Globe Bench Marked. Our Green Globe policy is placed in our room directory and also at our front desk. Our staff are involved in maintaining the Green Globe Bench marked status.

Our office practices using recycled paper wherever and whenever possible. Recycling is not done on a large scale because there is no facility on island handling same. However at the hotel on a small scale we use old table cloths and sheets to make laundry bags and carry bags for the housekeepers. In the offices, we use recycle paper in our fax machine, computer printer and for note pads. We also reuse envelopes for internal usage.

    Community:
Our hotel employs 100% local staff. At our reception area there are various stands with advertising materials for several local companies providing various services for the tourists. We do not have a written purchasing policy, but it is mandatory that all purchases are done locally, with the exception of linen and heavy equipment and some items which are not available locally.

Staff training is ongoing, both in house and from regional and national training providers. We support a number of these organizations. We auction items during one of our activities, and the proceeds go to the AIDS Foundation. We support the New Life Organization (NEWLO) which provides vocational skills training throughout our island. We host a NEWLO Family Day where the proceeds from bingo and Karaoke competition goes to the organization. We support the Grand Anse Home for the Aged where a weekly lunch is provided to residents of the home. We also donate used linens to this and other such institutions on the island. Many cash donations are given to various charitable organizations during the year.

Every guest is exposed to our culture. Every Monday evening we put on a Taste of Grenada Buffet where we feature local foods and spices. Our entertainment also features local culture and customs. On Wednesday, we feature a steelband, and the guests gets to interact with the players who are always proud to give a history and brief training on the steelband.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
