introduction to Isle of Wight luxury bed and breakfast

The house has been providing guest accommodation since at least the 1960's - we occasionally get callers who tell us they used to stay here when they were children. The farm's location in an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) makes it ideal for those seeking total peace and relaxation.

The farm achieved organic status about 10 years ago which has increased its appeal. The bridleway running through the farm was used by Queen Victoria's carriage when she visited the neighbouring Appuldurcombe Estate.

    rooms, food and facilities
Our 2 rooms are spacious and comfortable with en suite facilities (both have bath and free standing shower), colour TV and countryside views. WiFi is available. Breakfast is served in the impressive oak-panelled hall. As we only cater for a few guests at a time the service is very personal and we aim to provide a home from home.

Local and organic produce is used wherever possible including free range Isle of Wight bacon and sausages produced on a neighbouring farm, our own free range eggs and honey, British organic milk and butter plus preserves homemade with our own fruit. Locally pressed apple juice is served together with a selection of other pure fruit juices.

Cycling & walking friendly: There are facilities if you wish to bring your own horse or bicycle and drying facilities for walkers. Maps and walking/cycling guides are available.

Disabled friendly: As the house is 100 years old and our 2 rooms are on the first floor it is not feasible to provide disabled facilities for all types of disability. However, some disabilities can be catered for eg people with sight impairment. Specific provision can be discussed at time of booking and provided to the guest. Service dogs are welcome.

how this holiday makes a difference
    Environment:
The grounds are treated organically and wildlife is encouraged. Only native plants are used and the grounds are not manicured therefore watering is kept to a minimum. We have a green island gold award and a copy of our environmental policy is provided for each unit.

All glass, paper and food waste is recycled/composted and guests are encouraged to do the same. Water saving bags are fitted in the toilets to minimise water used for flushing and we use low energy bulbs where practical. We ask our guests to switch off lights when leaving their room.

We are gradually replacing our towels and bed linen with organic cotton – this has been produced in an environmentally, chemical free way and feels softer. We also use towels more than once where possible.

We invite guests to walk the footpaths and bridleways which cross the farm so they can appreciate the wildlife, farm animals, birds and local trees and plants. We encourage our guests to recycle and to support Gift to Nature.

The farm and garden are also organic and the farmland is entered into environmental stewardship which means extensive grazing, no fertiliser, no pesticide, planting nectar rich grasses in certain areas. The woodlands host bats, dormice and red squirrels which are European Protected Species.

    Community:
We use locally produced ingredients for our breakfasts – this reduces food miles and hence pollution and also supports local businesses.

There are several footpaths which cross our organic farmland and these are well used by locals, visitors and local school children who have visited the farm. A local part time seasonal cleaner is employed. Toiletries provided for guests are produced on the island from locally grown lavender, cakes are also locally made, all services used are local trades people.

We work closely with Godshill Organics who stock our beef and lamb in their shop when it's available and it's from there I buy the chocolate cakes every week for guests' arrival.

Guests are encouraged to shop at Godshill Organics and also the weekly Farmers' Market - this is mentioned in the welcome pack.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
