special things to do and see here
Diving One of Kosrae's crowning jewels is her stunning fringing reef. The abundance of marine life and pristine hard corals make this a prime destination for divers throughout the world. Many of our best dive sites have mild currents and are good for novice divers. However, to help keep our pristine corals healthy, you'll need to have good buoyancy skills. This coral reef is unique in that novice divers can enjoy an easy diving experience, while their more experienced dive buddy will marvel at the sea life.
Diving Courses and instruction
The following instruction and courses are available at Sleeping Lady Divers:
he Full Open Water Diver course Our fully equipped classroom (including DVD's and Cdrom's, current instructor's manuals and class outlines) are available for group leaders and instructors use at no extra charge.
Eco adventures
Hike through the dense rainforests that cover the slopes of Kosrae's mountains, explore the sea coast and mangrove swamps in a kayak, visit ancient Micronesian or World War II ruins, take your binoculars and go bird watching or snorkel or surf in Micronesia's blue, blue water. There are so many activities that you will need weeks to experience them all.
rooms, food and facilities
Our island accommodations are traditional Micronesian style cottages situated under the shade of mangrove, pandanus and coconut trees at the ocean's edge and connected by paths of naturally hard packed sand. Strategically placed torches provide night lighting along the paths. Traditionally, the construction of a Kosraean lohm or house begins by burying four huge corner posts six feet or more in the ground. These posts give the house its strength. Although the look is traditional and construction interesting, modern amenities have been tastefully added for our guests' comfort. These include queen beds (draped in mosquito netting), ceiling fans, hot and cold running water, a large table, chairs, in-room refrigerator and coffee pot. We are happy to exchange the queen beds for twin or single size beds, put in a large worktable (photographers - take note!) or make any other adjustments you need.
Something truly unique, the cottages are handicapped accessible. This means bigger rooms and easier access for everybody. Entrances are ramped (starting with the parking area), with resting places where necessary.
Dining
The Inum Restaurant has a regional reputation as one of the best in Micronesia. Specializing in local and international dishes, the dinner menu changes nightly, depending on the availability of fresh local produce, chicken and fish.
Conferences and workshops
The resort is also a popular venue for small focused conferences and workshops. The Inum Restaurant's large dining room plus the smaller private dining room permits great flexibility. The private dining room seats approximately 12 for dinner or 14 to 16 in a lecture configuration. The large main room is also easily subdivided to set up a dedicated conference space, leaving a small dining room available to the public.

Environment
We built from the ground up to minimize impact on the building site and the adjoining reef and mangroves. No land filling or use of heavy equipment protected the fragile land and minimized tree cutting. We ensure sustainable operations by the use of all sewage is treated by proper septic systems, florescent lighting, recycling (aluminium, plastic drinking bottles, paper, car batteries and tires) and reusing (glass jars, other containers and any materials that seem useful) and not using dangerous chemicals. Waste food goes to local pig farmers and green waste is composted. We minimize power usage by line drying the laundry and make sure that restaurant products (take away plates, etc) are biodegradable. Kosrae usually has over 200 inches of rain a year so although water conservation is not an issue, water contamination is an issue and we ensure that our cleaning products and waste water do not contaminate the water. We have been committed to environmental conservation since the building phase. In addition to making sure that all sewage is treated by proper septic systems, we have had an active coral monitoring program since 1996, were instrumental in the mooring buoy project (60 buoys over 43 miles of reef!), founded the local conservation NGO and other community conservation groups. Diving guests have an opportunity to join in the various award winning reef preservation projects. Community Guests stay in a cottage constructed in the ancient manner (with modern beds and electricity) and can totally immerse themselves in Kosraean culture. All staffs are from local villages and guests are encouraged to join in local events (the website and room literature has a lot of information about how to fit in comfortably). Events that guests regularly attend include church services, village festivals and canoe racing days, Christmas celebrations and liberation day events. We have been committed to staff development, training local people to fill technical and professional positions, rather than hiring foreign nationals. We also ensure that we support the local community by purchasing all produce and fish from local farmers and fishermen. We have been committed to environmental conservation since the building phase. Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
