Environment
Our resort is taking steps to be more environmentally friendly. Currently we use well water or grey water for our gardens. We encourage our guests to reduce, reuse and recycle by placing cards in rooms advising guests of how they are assisting the environment by opting to have towels changed twice a week rather than daily. Our resort transplanted a 100 year old tree for Arbor Day, to allow it to flourish in better conditions on property. Energy efficient bulbs e.g Literonic and GE are used in every area of the hotel. Guests are encouraged to turn off the A/C and lights when exiting their rooms. Double flush toilets are utilized and this helps conserve water. All rooms are equipped with low flow shower heads and faucets. Guests are given tours of the garden. There is also a compost on property to help fertilize the gardens. Community Regarding employment 95% our hotel staff are local and other 5 % are comprised of caricom nationals. Produce such as vegetables and meat are purchased locally. Local businesses such as Stoute’s Car Rental are utilized by our concierge desk to book car rentals for our guests. Our landscaping department has adopted a primary school in the area to help ensure that their grounds are kept tidy. We are currently working with the Samuel Jackman Prescod polytechnic on a job attachment programme and students are currently working in areas such as administration, landscaping, construction and food and beverage. Barbados has so much culture and so much to enjoy that we definitely encourage our guests to dine in other restaurants and experience our island activities and tours. The very popular local activity or dining experience is the Oistin’s fish fry which allows guest to eat local fish and dishes at very reasonable prices and meet Barbadians. This also helps to support our fish vendors who have stalls at the fish fry. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
