A long winding drive through ancient woods and deer pastures brings you to the enormous front door of this splendid Georgian mansion. A warm welcome, afternoon tea by the open fire and the hospitality of the owners make you feel like you’re visiting old friends.

The family home to 8 generations was built in 1774 and is in immaculate condition. The 14 foot high ceilings, bright, spacious bedrooms and original antiques at every turn will take your breath away.

Dinner is a highlight served at candle lit tables set with family silver and crystal. Ingredients straight from our own vegetable and fruit gardens produce wonderfully fresh flavours.

This is the land of W.B. Yeats with mountains, lakes and megalithic ruins along with Championship golf courses, beaches and fishing just a short drive away. But the best place to be is on the 500 acre estate with delightful paths through the woods and deer pastures. If you’re lucky, Alice the spaniel might take you for a walk!

Walking: Great for walking. Woodland walks on the estate plus deer, sheep & cattle farm and a 5,000 year old hill fort. Local village of Riverstown half hour walk.

Cycling and further afield: Bikes can be borrowed. Close to Carrowkeel – megalithic passage graves with stunning views over Lough Arrow. Further afield by car: Yeats Country – Lisadell House, Benbulben, Lough Gill.

Also great surf beaches, horse riding, and some of the best golf in Ireland. Live music in the area every night.

The Venetian Room, on the first floor, is the original Master bedroom and the largest in the house. It has a charming four poster queen-sized bed with views over the lawns at the front of the house and an en suite bathroom.

The Yellow Room
The Yellow Room, on the first floor, has a beautiful queen-size canopy bed with both east and south facing windows granting views down to the river. In the light and airy en suite bathroom is a wonderful original Victorian roll top bath with brass fittings and an enormous shower head.

The Blue Room
Luxury hotel in Ireland - The Blue RoomLocated on the first floor, accommodation is offered in this spacious room with a wonderful king-size canopied double bed and an en suite bathroom. Its location on the corner of the house grants it views to the west and north and wonderful afternoon sunshine.

The Georgian Room
B&B guests are offered flexible accommodation in The Georgian Room, which is also located on the first floor. There is a queen-size four poster bed plus an additional single bed and its own en suite private bathroom with tub and walk-in shower. The windows are south facing and overlook the River Unshin with a backdrop of the Co Sligo countryside.

The Pink Room
The Pink Room is located on the first floor. This bright and airy room has a magnificent king-size canopy bed and en suite bathroom with a large walk-in shower but no bathtub. It has windows to the east and to the north overlooking the front of the house.

The School Room
The School Room on the second floor has a modern king-size bed that can easily be converted to a twin-bedded room. As a corner room it has fantastic views both down to the river and over the Stable yard. The en suite bathroom is the largest in the house with a tub and great walk-in shower.

The Green Room
Luxury hotel in Ireland - The Green RoomThe Green Room, on the first floor, has an elegant queen-size canopy bed with south facing views down to the river. The large bathroom is the most spectacular in the house with a pre 1910 Victorian roll top bath complete with huge shower head and unusual surround spray function. Though private to the room, this bathroom is NOT en suite and one must walk 7 meters down the hall to reach it. Comfortable dressing gowns and slippers are provided for this purpose.

The Jade Room
Located at the corner of the house the room also has magnificent views that take in the the Stable Yard to the west as well as the lawns and flower beds at the front of the house. The Jade Room also has its own en suite bathroom with tub and walk-in shower.

Family friendly: Well behaved children welcome. 50% discount for under 12’s. No charge for under 2’s.

Pet friendly: Dogs are welcome but not in the house. They can sleep in the car or our own stables.

By rail: Dublin – Ballymote 6 trains a day. 3 hours. Complimentary pick up from Station.

By road: From Dublin Take route N4, signed to Sligo. Enter county of Sligo. Pass through village of Castlebaldwin. After 5 miles, at Drumfin cross roads, turn right towards Riverstown. After a 1¼ miles, turn left into driveway of the house, clearly signed. Follow signs to House.Driving time from Dublin: 2.5 hours.

By air: 40 minutes from Knock Airport. Daily flights to the UK
how this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We were audited in June 2009 and have an Eu Ecolabel Flower. In the last two years we have planted 6,000 hardwood trees on the estate. All tap water is derived from rain harvesting and topped up by our spring. We have a wetlands reed bed to treat sewage. The main heat source is wind-blown timber. 80% of electricity used is wind generated. We recycle and compost. We allow no shooting on the estate and feed wild barn owls every night.

The O’Hara family are aware of our responsibility to manage the environmental impact of our business and have assessed our activities to determine the nature of that impact. We would like to point out that we are most fortunate to live in a 235 year old building that was built in an age of self sufficiency and designed with enormous windows for light, to be heated with bio-fuels and to use the rain that falls on her roof. Our performance so far: Heating: Taking advantage of windblown timber from the 500 acre estate, the public rooms are heated by a large wood burning stove and three open fires. Fresh Water: We collect rain water from the roof and supplement it with our own spring water. It then goes through a natural filtration process before arriving in our taps. Waste Water: All waste water is treated in our own septic tank and then a wetlands reed bed. The pure water leaving there is tested regularly. Recycling: Meals are cooked to order so there is little waste. Fruit and vegetable waste is composted and put back into our gardens or fed to our deer and sheep. Plastic, glass and paper are separated and recycled. Newspapers are turned into bedding for local stables.

We implement the following practices:

Electricity:
Our electricity provider sources 80% of its power from renewable sources, primarily wind. Older light bulbs are being replaced by low energy versions as they need replacement.

Food:
Wherever possible we grow our own, when that is not practical we buy locally, and the last option is to buy nationally. On a day when Venison is on the menu we can boast that the distance from farm to fork is about 500 metres! We have an expanding vegetable garden and have a fruit garden providing the ingredients for many of our deserts and jams.

Estate Management:
On our farm we participate in the latest Rural Environmental Protection Scheme guaranteeing measures to care for the land such as the preservation of stone walls & hedgerows, care of our livestock and the promotion of bio-diversity in our wild flora and fauna. In our extensive woodland we grow beautiful hardwoods such as beech, oak and ash and are part of ongoing national Native Woodland Improvement schemes to encourage indigenous species. In the last two years we planted over 6,000 hardwood trees on an estate that already had extensive woodland. We encourage wildlife by preserving habitat and allowing no shooting on our property and provide extra food for endangered Barn Owls that were bred on the estate and then released.

Community
100% of the staff come from the immediate area which means that they can often walk, cycle or car share to work. All wages go directly into the local community. Produce which isn’t grown on site is bought as locally as possible. Laundry is done on site providing local employment and eliminating transport emissions.
