description
Our self guided walking holiday is ideal for people keen to walk independently, who like to enjoy the real Spain, and prefer not to have the chore of repacking and moving on each day.
Our location is also very suited to those who would like to mix walking with cultural activities. The walking experience starts the moment you step outside the main entrance and the surrounding mountains and valleys provides numerous introductory and moderate walking routes. Imagine walking in the blissful quiet of the countryside and brushing through the rosemary, thyme and sage to release their heady perfume.
We are based in the village of Lubrin in the province of Almeria and is 2000ft up in the Sierra de los Filabres range of mountains and just 45 mins inland from Mojacar and Garrucha on the Costa del Almeria. The village was settled by the Moors sometime after the 8th century. The Clock Tower, on the magnificent rock outcrop Castillo Arabes, was constructed in 1309. The Moors were expelled from Southern Spain in 1452 by the Catholic King Ferdinand and in 1587 Lubrin was settled by Marqués del Carpio and later by the Duques de Berwik y Alba with families originating from other provinces. The main agricultural crops were cereal and olives and originally there were three almanzaras (olive presses) and six molinos (flour mills).
The accommodation is to be found in a renovated Andalucian Cortijo (farmhouse) ideally located to provide peace and tranquillity yet within walking distance of the village. The apartments are spacious and full of character and are ideally suited for 2 or 4 persons. Each apartment has 2 private terraces with views over the surrounding mountains and valleys. The upper ground floor has a 2bed + 2bath apartment ideal for a family holiday The lower ground floor has two 1Bed + 1Bath adjoining apartments and so ideal for 2 couples that enjoy each others company but would prefer to have their own independent accommodation. The apartments have fully equipped kitchens and are extremely comfortable and cosy with central heating and log burning stoves. There is Freeview Television and also Wireless Broadband.
Lubrin pueblo It is a typical Andalucian village tucked away high in the Sierra de Los Filabres. It’s charm lies in its narrow streets, its white village houses adorned with bright geraniums and bougainvillea, and its endless sunshine. Not forgetting the charming villagers of Lubrin that provide for all the basic holiday necessities and includes 2 Supermarkets, 2 Bakers, 2 Butchers, and Bank with ATM machine, Post Office, 3 Restaurants and numerous Tapas Bars. The main fiestas are January 20th, Mid August and early October. There are also additional fiestas in the surrounding hamlets.
Our aim is to ensure that you experience a memorable walking holiday along with an unforgettable experience of mountain hospitality from the delightful and charming villagers of Lubrin.
Morning and/or evening walks combined with:
Granada is just 2 hours away by car on the new Almeria to Sevilla motorway. It might prove difficult not to be seduced by the opportunity to visit the Alhambra, which stands out as the most famous example of Moorish architecture

how this holiday makes a difference

Environment:
Almeria is a low rainfall area and so travellers are reminded that fresh water is a very precious commodity and should not be wasted, so use a minimum for showering and washing. We ask that guests ensure that lights and ceiling fans are switched off when not required, and do not leave TV, Video, Hi-Fi etc in standby mode – switch off at the set. Separate household waste is sorted into general waste, glass, paper & cardboard and plastic for deposit to the village recycling bins. We support our local PAWS (Peoples Animal Welfare Society) by taking stray animals to their compound and also by delivering personal and household effects to their charity shop in Mojacar. We encourage travellers to walk into village and use the local bus. Community: The past 20 years has witnessed a steady decline in the traditional industries of agriculture, mining and animal husbandry and the Mayor, along with the support of the Provincial and Regional Governments is committed to the introduction of tourism as a replacement industry. Work has started on identifying and marking the old donkey trails that criss cross the almond and olive groves in the Sierra de los Filabres around Lubrin. We are proud to be part of the quest to breathe new life into the village of Lubrin. We employ a single parent local woman to carry out the domestic cleaning and a retired farmer to maintain the gardens. We use a local builder to maintain the fabric of the old Cortijo and outbuildings and a local plumber and electrician to maintain the infrastructure. We locally purchase hard and soft furnishings, white goods and electrical items. We also locally purchase our food and household items and encourage travellers to do the same. We provide travellers with a map of the village showing the locations of the village shops together with the bars and restaurants. We sponsor a village website and are listing the local services to show travellers that there are all the basic necessities on our doorstep. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
