introduction to Coral Bay beach accommodation in Western Australia

Located in the heart of the Ningaloo Reef, we offer a range of accommodation including our new environmentally responsible one bedroom villas. These villas are self-contained with a queen bed and are built north facing to take advantage of the environment for optimum heating and cooling effects. Installed with grey water recycling systems, we also use the naturally occurring artesian bore water to heat our hot water for these units. The majority of power in Coral Bay is produced by wind. Utilising this renewable energy source and introducing environmentally responsible accommodation options, we are looking to implement systems to ensure an ongoing sustainable future for tourism in our unique environment. Relax by the pool or on the idyllic beach. Enjoy a boat tour or snorkel over the magnificent reef, just metres from shore. Immerse yourself in the wonders of the Ningaloo Reef.
special things to do and see here
Coral Bay is located at the southern gateway to the world famous Ningaloo Reef. Over 250 species of coral and 500 species of fish thrive in these crystal clear waters. Relax on the stunning white sand beach, or snorkel from the shore over the magnificent reef. The 'must do’ coral viewing and snorkelling tours operate daily on our new glass bottom boat, Miss Coral Bay III. A range of other tours are available on our 40ft Vessel, the MV Ningaloo, including turtle and manta ray tours, nature tours and whale watching (in season).

how this holiday makes a difference
Community
Recycling is not available in our region. We advise of this on our website and in our brochures and encourage our guests to consider packaging carefully & take rubbish with them upon departure, where possible.

To support marine research in the Coral Bay area, we donated and maintain the building for the North West Research Association. This research station is operated with the assistance of the Murdoch University Foundation and offers laboratory and office facilities with accommodation for up to 10 persons.

Environment
We are reducing our carbon footprint by implementing systems to reduce our consumption of power and water. By installing grey water recycling systems into our new villas, rather than using fresh water, our grey water from these units is used to water plants in surrounding garden areas. Artesian water from the naturally occurring bore is used to heat water for showers and sinks in these units. This reduces our consumption of power and water in our remote low rainfall region.

The average annual rainfall is only 100mm, and water is a valuable commodity to be used sparingly. Water within the Coral Bay townsite comes from an 830 metre deep bore that we installed and maintain. We use reverse osmosis to desalinate all drinking water. The bore water is perfectly suitable for showering, food preparation and cooking. We have planted over 3,000 trees to provide shade and attract birds and butterflies. Salt resistant strains of grass have been established within the grounds of our resort. Grassed areas are regularly replanted following peak holiday times.

The two tour and charter boats operated by us - Miss Coral Bay III and MV Ningaloo - are specially designed to prevent damage to the coral reef and are powered by environmentally responsible motors. Also, fishing is not permitted within sanctuary zones along the reef

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
