description
Our cottages provide the best of both worlds: charming Caribbean-style cottage accommodation in a jungle setting, yet only one mile from Punta Gorda Town (PG) in Toledo, Southern Belize.

This is an ideal location for your adventure holiday, easy on the budget, and with great access to Toledo's many inland attractions, Port Honduras Marine Reserve, and the World Heritage Site Sapodilla Cayes. Plentiful home-cooked meals are available on-site at Charlie's Bar, prepared with ingredients grown on our farm.

Family-run, we aim to offer you friendly, personal service, a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and excellent value for money.

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle and coffee delivered to your verandah, cool off in our new "plunge pool", walk our nature trails, or take a self-guided bike tour on one of our free bikes. Explore Boom Creek Village and take a trip on the Moho River in a traditional dug-out canoe or visit further afield on one of our range of many tours of the District...

All the comforts of home, and more, from which to explore the beautiful Toledo District of Belize!
special things to do and see here
Once you’ve relaxed in your hammock, walked our jungle trails, and explored the local area by bike, we are on-hand to arrange any number of tours for you to explore the Toledo District.

Ruins, jungle accommodation in Belize Off the beaten track activities include jungle hiking and exploring ancient Maya sites, cave swimming and waterfalls, cultural exchanges in the traditional Maya villages, and the cacao trail to the local cocoa farms which supply the cocoa for Green & Black’s Maya Gold chocolate.

For water-babies, Toledo’s river and coastline offers great kayaking trips, while the Port Honduras Marine Reserve has numerous mangrove islands, coral cayes, and great snorkelling. Further offshore, the World Heritage Site Sapodilla Cayes entice you with their diving opportunities, or simply a picture postcard beach! Tours are arranged through local tour operators, who use only local registered tour guides.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
Belize rainforest accommodationThese cottages have been created with minimal impact to the environment, and maximum benefit to the community. A small part of the land had been cleared several years before for small-scale farming, and it is only this area which has been re-developed for the cottages and the farm. The lion's share of the area is in its original natural state and, with many large trees and lush vegetation, is home to an array of wildlife. We grow trees for re-planting on both our and neighbouring land, and propagate native species to attract the wildlife.

Best management practices form a vital part of our philosophy, and we have adopted these principles in all areas of operation. We continually strive to reduce energy from non-renewable power sources through the installation of solar panels and a battery bank, and the use of energy-saving light bulbs and other energy-efficient electrical devices. We employ water-saving practices, with efficient shower heads, a linen re-use programme, and the provision of free water bottle re-fills for guests (we do not purchase small bottles of water, but provide guests with insulated bottles for day-trips, and adapt glass bottles for use in the cottage rooms). Solid waste is kept to a minimum: only limited re-cycling facilities exist in Belize and we are therefore constantly mindful of the ‘cradle to grave’ principle and reduce, re-use and re-cycle wherever and whatever possible. Organic matter is composted, aluminium saved for taking to a re-cycling facility when we visit Belize City, and we minimise the amount of packaging and plastic we purchase. We are working with Renco Battery Factory in Belize City to introduce a battery re-cycling scheme in Toledo.

Belize rainforest accommodation, waterfallWe employ only local staff, and consider staff training an integral element in ensuring long-term sustainability of the tourism industry in Toledo; we are committed to training, empowering and supporting our staff in all aspects of their work. We use only registered Belizean tour operators, who themselves employ only Belizean certified tour guides, to help spread the tourist dollar further, and provide sustained employment.

We are committed to purchasing as many goods locally as possible, and approximately 90% of our purchases are made within 3 miles of the cottages.

We give preference to local (Toledo) and then Belizean produced goods and services, those that are environmentally friendly and from sustainable resources, and those that are eco-labelled and from socially responsible manufacturers. Our purchases cover a wide range of products from our beautiful hardwood floors to the Toledo produced goods in our gift shop, and from our range of local spirits and wines, to the locally-grown fresh fruits and vegetables purchased from PG market to supplement those grown on our farm.

We are passionate about our adopted homeland, and make every effort to participate in community events and programmes – these range from providing twice-yearly month-long agricultural internships to students from the Julian Cho Technical High School, to our organizing the donation of school supplies to Boom Creek Village School, as well as heavy involvement in the organizing of the Toledo Cacao Festival and its resultant Cacao Trail tours which help benefit the cocoa farmers of the District.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
