A range of boutique hotels, restaurants, b&bs and spas with indigenous owners have also recently been launched under the Afriportico brand offering visitors an insight into local culture and cuisine in a high quality environment. The brand is being developed in association with the Africa Unite Tourism Empowerment Network which aims to promote economic development of black-owned tourism enterprises.
Homestead stays with local Zulu families are becoming increasingly popular. Here visitors can experience a traditional homestead or ‘Umuzi’ staying with a Zulu family in a village environment for a night or more. The package will often include displays of traditional dancing as well as guided visits to local schools, shops and village communities.
