Where
Lanzarote is located around 1,000 kilometres from the Spanish mainland and approximately 100 kilometres from the coast of Africa. This island is the most northerly and easterly of the Canarian Archipelago.
The Canaries are provinces of Spain and are in touch with its principle cities through frequent daily flights. Flying time from Madrid, the Spanish capital to Lanzarote is only a little over two and a quarter hours. AlI major air lines operate on Lanzarote connecting this island in the Atlantic with the rest of the world.
Lanzarote measures just over 800 square kilometres, including the isles of Alegranza, La Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Infierno or Oeste. The island is divided into seven municipal districts (Haria, Teguise, Tinajo, San Bartolomé, Arrecife, Tías and Yaiza).
Despite its relatively small size Lanzarote offers visitors an exceptional diversity of landscapes. The volcanic eruptions of the 18th and 19th centuries left their mark in the form of a tableau of spectacular scenery. But besides volcanic caves and grottos, streams of petrified lava and craters the island also boasts beaches of golden sands and the crystal-clear waters of the ocean.
Timanfaya National Park, a large expanse of singular volcanic beauty, is one of the island's principle attractions as are Jámeos del Agua grotto and Cueva de los Verdes caves in the north of the island. Another great advantage is the mild year-round temperature averaging 22 degrees centigrade. This is due to its location in the tropic of Cáncer where the high temperatures of the Sahara meet the cold current from the Gulf of México. This isle of eternal spring is situated in the Atlantic Ocean between 28° 14' and 28° 49' north latitude and 7° 13'and 7° 41' west longitude.
