There’s so much to see and do on and around the Great Ocean Road, so where to begin? Here are our top five experiences to get you started:
Walking and hiking
Whether you’re looking for a short ramble or a long-distance hike, the Great Ocean Road is the ideal place to don those hiking boots. If you’re looking for short walks, you’ll find numerous easy loops and one-day tracks through a diverse range of environments from sandy beaches to rocky clifftops, but if you want to really explore it has to be the Great Ocean Walk – a long-distance trail which covers 104km of beautiful coastal landscape from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles.

Whales, dolphins and seals
A visit to this coastal region wouldn’t be complete without some time on the water. Get out on the waves on a boat trip or in a canoe and encounter bottlenose and common dolphins, hop on a helicopter to see if you can spot blue whales out at sea or you can paddle out to the seal colonies in a sea kayak and enjoy views of the coast as well as getting up close to Australian Fur Seals as they come out to greet you.

The Otways
A destination in itself, the Otways area is not to be missed. Spectacular natural attractions abound including wet fern gullies, towering trees and roaring waterfalls. Man has also made his mark, with the historic Cape Otway Lightstation, the soaring Otway Fly Tree Top Walk and the fascinating Cape Otway Conservation Centre. Don’t miss the amazing wildlife in this region where glow worms light up the night, koalas hug the trees and you can even canoe with a native oddity, the platypus.

Port Campbell National Park
Port Campbell National Park is a true work of nature, home to the most iconic sight on the Great Ocean Road, the Twelve Apostles. Formed over millions of years, the immense cliffs and impressive rock formations which rise straight out of the sea will have you gazing in awe. Discover this unique landscape from the numerous viewpoints or from the skies on a helicopter ride and look out for wildlife including dozens of species of birds, Australian fur seals and the occasional bottle-nosed dolphin.

Unique wildlife and Aboriginal heritage
Australia is home to some truly unique wildlife and no trip to Victoria would be complete without meeting some of these very special antipodeans. Go canoeing with platypus in the Great Otway National Park, see glow worms light up the night at Melba Gully and get up close and personal with koalas, kangaroos and emus while discovering Aboriginal heritage at Tower Hill State Game Reserve – but remember to keep your eyes peeled at all times, this whole area is one large wildlife sanctuary.
