Born Free Foundation policy
Policy Aims
The Born Free Foundation is a UK registered charity whose broad aims are to protect and conserve wild species in their natural habitat; reduce unnecessary animal suffering; carry out and publish research that will enhance our understanding of wild animals and their protection and care; and to educate the public as widely as possible about the need to conserve wild species and prevent individual animal suffering.
Economic Responsibility
The charity is governed by a Board of Trustees including Virginia McKenna, Jenny Seagrove and Sandi Toksvig who, together with others from the business and legal sector are charged with ensuring the good governance of Born Free. They make sure that the Foundation spends it resources wisely in pursuit of its aims and also guarantees that the Foundation does not engage in economic activities that are either unwise or inappropriate. It’s investment strategy is subject to a rigorous analysis by independent financial advisors.
Environmental Responsibility
Born Free has taken positive approach to its Environmental Policy designed to use resources wisely and efficiently, thereby aiming to minimise our environmental impact as an organisation.
Steps we have taken include recycling waste where possible; minimising our chemical contamination or pollution of the environment by reducing the use of products containing such materials; replacing existing items with more environmentally benign products. Staff have also become conscious of water saving measures, and minimising use of electricity - supplies of which have been switched to “green” sources.
Our purchasing policy now includes consideration of packaging, the reusing and purchasing of recycled goods and minimising waste products reaching landfill. We are also currently looking to introduce a carbon emissions off-set scheme in Kenya.
Social Responsibility
The Foundation takes a proactive stance on social issues. It complies with all relevant legislation relating to employment opportunities; it offers educational opportunities to the wider community; it offers work experience opportunities; it seeks to be good employer in relation to the terms and conditions of employment it offers to its staff both here and abroad.
