read 11 travellers reviews
This is a classic trip packed full of highlights. Read the reviews to hear about; pandas; staying at the monastery on a mountain guarded by monkeys; the three lesser gorges; cycling through the Yangshuo countryside; the welcoming and entertaining people; watching a cormorant fishing at night and having this very large bird sitting on your arm! You'll do lots of activities led by local people, who are able to share their knowledge and experiences (although you might not want to eat snake as other clients have done).

From the majestic splendour of Beijing in the north to the sublime beauty of southern China and with plenty of adventure in between, join us to experience the true essence of China - you won't be disappointed.
day-by-day itinerary
Days 1-4:Beijing. Walk a stretch of the Great Wall, check out Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City and stop by Beijing Huiling, an Intrepid-supported local organisation that supports intellectually disabled members of the community.
Days 5-7:Xi'an. The ancient capital is abundant with cultural marvels including the famous Terracotta Warriors. For a change of pace, retreat to the serene Great Mosque. After dusk, devour some tasty morsels at the Muslim Quarter night markets.
Days 8-9:Chengdu/Leshan. Visit the residents of a giant panda reserve. This region is home to spicy Sichuan cuisine, including the much-loved hot pot. In Leshan, marvel at the world's biggest stone Buddha.
Days 10-11:Emei Shan. From clear mountain streams running through subtropical rain forest to old growth forest shrouding ancient monasteries, Emei Shan is one of the most famous Buddhist sites in China and a welcome retreat from the busy cities.
Days 12-16:Yangzi River. Travel to Chongqing, gateway to the majestic Yangzi River. Cruise the river and witness the dramatic scenery of the Three Gorges, constantly changing due to the construction of the world's largest hydroelectric dam. The cruise comes to an end in Yichang.
Days 17-19:Yangshuo. A traveller's delight, Yangshuo is surrounded by hundreds of limestone peaks rising from fertile rice paddies. Cycle through the countryside and enjoy lunch in a local farmhouse.
Days 20-21:Hong Kong. Experience the electric atmosphere of this international city, which still has all the elements of Old China pumping through its veins. Summit Victoria Peak for fabulous views over the harbour and city skyline.
travellers' tales
Marvellous. Gorgeous scenery, amazing food and we got a real chance to meet and talk to the local people. Our cruise along the Li River - the scenery was just amazing and after all the trekking it was a really rewarding rest...even more so than the monasteries! (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
While travelling in China we encourage all our travellers to learn of and show respect for cultural differences. Our small groups and using a variety of local transport enables travellers to experience cultures at first hand, offering greater opportunity for cross-cultural understanding.

There are a number of basic ways in which we try to minimise our impact such as implementing waste reduction practices. Reusing plastic bags, water bottles and using our own set of chopsticks (instead of disposable ones). We stay in monasteries at Emeishan and a smaller locally owned guesthouse in Yangshou. In most places we use guides from the local areas we visit. In Yangshou many of our guides are from farming families in the surrounding areas and our business creates many benefits for people of the area.

Since 1999 we have been supporting a local charity in the Yangshou area called Project Hope. Money raised through passenger donations has been used to assist over 30 local children from poor families to continue their schooling through to completion. Without this type of assistance these children would have to drop out of school, severely limiting their future opportunities. Some money raised has also been used to provide teaching and sporting equipment for some of the most disadvantaged schools in the area. At the end of this trip, in Hong Kong or Beijing, we are happy to collect unwanted clothing to distribute through local charities.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
