the amazing things you'll be doing
The Mount Arthur area offers numerous day walks from easy to off track challenging. Options include reaching the summit with magnificent 360 degree vistas, from Tasman Bay into the interior of Kahurangi. The limestone massif of Mount Arthur, along with Mt Owen in the interior of Kahurangi National Park, is the premiere limestone area of New Zealand. It features some of the best examples of karst formations in the Southern Hemisphere - sink holes, pot holes and caving systems. The alpine flora on the mountain is an equal to anywhere in NZ.
There is a choice of walks, including reaching the summit at 1795 metres with vistas out to Tasman Bay through to the interior of Kahurangi.
We drive to an altitude of 930 metres, where your guides, with knowledge of local flora and fauna, can take you on anything from easy tracks to more challenging ridge top walking. We can also show you the 'Friends of Flora' conservation project instigated by our company, to help protect the rare indigenous fauna in the Flora catchment on the slopes of the mountain. On the slopes of the mountain, pristine beech forest abounds. An easy well graded track to the bush edge, or along the Flora stream, is suitable for all fitness levels. Birds which may be seen are; Tomtit, Bellbird, Rifleman, Fantail, Robin, Blue Duck, Weka, Kaka and Kakareiki.
All day trips include picnic lunch and complementary transport from accommodation in Motueka. All day trips start one hours drive from Motueka to Mount Arthur car park. One option is to do three separate day trips based from a tent site near the car park.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
New Zealand's indigenous bird life has been ravished by introduced predators. NZ was once a mammal free country. Birds evolved without fear of ground based predators. Introduced stoats, rats, ferrets, cats etc have decimated NZ's unique birdlife. The Flora catchment on the slopes of Mount Arthur once had an abundance of birdlife, including the rare Blue Duck, one of the worlds few torrent ducks. Many other species still exist in small numbers.
'FRIENDS OF FLORA' is a conservation project instigated by us. This volunteer project involves monitoring bird numbers and setting and monitoring predator trap lines along the Flora stream. The object being to return the bird numbers in the Flora catchment to the numbers they once were. The operating procedures of the project can be shown to day trippers by our guides. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
