the amazing things you'll be doing
Learn first about the problem of child labour in the silk weaving industry.

Spend time with us and get an inside view of India's silk weaving industry and its supporting villages.

See what is being done to eradicate child labor in the Kanchipuram area.

This NGO programme strikes at the entrenched culture of child labour from many sides, by providing Bridge Schools that ease the transition from workplace to classroom and by training and supporting the families of released child laborers to become economically self sufficient.

The NGO works intimately with the village people who will be happy to meet you and show you around their village.

The Cultural Experience includes:
  • An overnight stay with the NGO director and his family, including dinner and breakfast.
  • Visit to a village for an up-close look at the cottage silk weaving industry.
  • See the weavers at work in their homes and how they become child-free labor operations.
  • Visit to one of the 6 Bridge Schools.
  • Tour of a silk weaving factory and a visit to factory silk stores that support child-free labour weaving.
If the Cultural Experience duration or pricing do not match your needs, we will work with you to create a programme that allows you to participate in all that you wish for the price and time period that you can afford.
Other tours

Rural temple visit:
Most visitors to Kanchipuram only visit the town and its temples, but there are numerous beautiful temples outside the city. With this add-on, the NGO and the villagers will show you their local rural temple.

Village culture and folklore tour:
This tour enables you to immerse yourself in the real history and identity of village people as is represented through their dance and music. We will arrange an evening of Indian culture and folklore with its songs, dance and village drama.

An intimate dinner with the NGO director and his family will complete the evening. There you can discuss the realities of village life and address any questions or curiosities that may have developed during your stay in India. This tour goes from 4-9pm (with the option of extending).
how this holiday makes a difference
In addition to the economic benefits that will help us support its programs, you will become better informed about the problems of child labour in India so that you will be able to educate others. Your visit may generate future volunteer opportunities for you and others to assist us in eradicating child labour and empowering women.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
