introduction to Selous Game Reserve & Mafia Island holiday

This superb fly-in trip enables you to visit the remote Selous Game Reserve bush camps quickly - a good option for those pressed for time. Light aircraft scheduled services run between the parks, reserves and islands. This trip offers you the best of the awesome Selous Game Reserve (42,000 sq. km of wilderness) and a slice of beach paradise that is the Mafia Archipelago.

You'll start by spending three nights at the photogenic Selous Impala Camp - located along the banks of the Rufiji River. Each of the Meru-style tents are raised on wooden platforms which face the river, allowing you to sit back and relax after a day’s safari and watch as the wildlife comes to down to the river to drink.

For a bit more adventure, you’ll then spend one night ‘fly-camping’ out in the bush. After venturing further out into the Selous Game Reserve during the afternoon, you’ll stay overnight on proper camp beds at the ‘fly-camping’ site. After dinner and a warm shower you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of the African bush, and wake at dawn to the chorus of birdsong.

The final 5 nights will be spent in the Mafia Archipelago - five sleepy tropical islands, clustered together in the Indian Ocean. Though only a 35-minute flight from Dar, these islands are little known and rarely visited. A highlight of your trip will be 5 nights at the remarkable Chole Mjini Lodge. It has no fence around it, and simply merges with the village. Six tree-houses stand on stilts, high up in baobab trees. From your tree-top, you look over the mangroves to the sea beyond. Bathrooms, at the base of the trees, have shared compost toilets and romantic open-air showers with plenty of hot water. In the main boma you will find large comfy cushions for relaxing on, many games, novels, reference books and a central table for dining.

how this holiday makes a difference
This Selous Game Reserve & Mafia Island holiday involves 5 nights at the remarkable Chole Mjini Lodge. The lodge has been set up as a partnership between researchers Jean and Anne de Villiers and the people of Chole Mjini. It aims to promote tourism and directly benefit the local community - and it succeeds.A significant proportion of the revenue received for every guest goes towards community development projects. So far this has facilitated the building of a kindergarten, school and small hospital, and there are more projects in progress.

We believe that sensitive and sustainable tourism is an invaluable help to developing the communities and preserving the environments of sub-Saharan Africa. So we encourage more people to visit Africa; promoting the positives through enjoyable and informative trips – whilst maximising the benefits these generate for the local economies, environments and host communities in Africa.

We aim to be a very fair company – to our travellers, to those who work for us and with us, and to the areas and communities which host our travellers.

We actively support areas where our traveller’s visits will help to conserve habitats and develop local communities. We aim to work with suppliers who provide local employment and training and who offer good quality, environmentally and culturally sensitive activities. We encourage local community participation in tourism projects and over the years we have supported a number of successful, small-scale conservation, community and educational projects in Africa.

Responsible tourism is at the heart of what we do and as part of our trips we also encourage our travellers to do their bit with informative suggestions on how to best support the local economy, minimise their footprint on the environment and to be culturally sensitive of the area they are visiting.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
