the amazing things you'll be doing
Unguja is the largest island in the Zanzibar Archipelago and has palm-fringed white beaches, pristine coral reefs and a colourful history believed to go back 2000 years. It has always had powerful trading links with Arabia and Persia, providing a gateway for slaves, gold, ivory, wood, spices, glass and textiles. In the early 16th century the Portuguese arrived, at which time the famous clove and spice plantations were established.
The best way to sample all the delights Unguja has to offer is to spend a few days investigating the cultural heritage in Stone Town before heading to the coast to relax on the glorious palm-fringed beaches and maybe try some diving or snorkelling in the crystal clear turquoise waters. In Stone Town you can stay at Emerson & Green - a hotel in a grand building with an atmosphere of 'Arabian Nights'. The hotel is located in the heart of Stone Town and is the perfect base for exploring the labyrinth of streets, shops, bazaars and whitewashed houses in the town.
You can then transfer to the coast, perhaps with a Spice Tour along the way to one of the numerous plantations on the island, where you can see and taste many of the spices, herbs and fruits that the island produces such as cloves, vanilla, cinnamon and lemongrass (amongst many others). Stay at a small hotel on the coast such as Matemwe Bungalows - which has views directly overlooking the Indian Ocean and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. From this base you can take walks along the beach, try out some snorkelling or diving, and relax on your private veranda, peacefully watching the comings and goings of the Ngalawa fishing fleet.
Your visit to Zanzibar can be completely tailor-made. You can stay for as many days as you would like and we can arrange any activities such as the spice tour or diving. The price given above is a guide only, based on 3 days at Emerson & Green and 4 days at Matemwe. But why not combine a visit to Zanzibar with an inland itinerary such as Northern Safari's or the Usambara Mountains.

|
The accommodation used by us on Zanzibar, are all small-scale hotels which are important employers providing jobs for local people. All the food served in these hotels is bought locally, to help the surrounding communities benefit economically from tourists. In addition, Matemwe Bungalows minimises its environmental impacts by using solar power for lighting and hot water. Furthermore, Matemwe encourages donations from guests to help fund projects such as the maintenance of the local school library, and small-scale conservation projects. The owners are also assisting in setting up a vegetable garden at the local school and the lodge.
We organise spice tours and transfers for guests. These use local taxi drivers and tour guides and we request that you pay for these locally so that the money goes directly to the drivers/guides. We will always inform you of the cost of such additional expenses so you can be assured that you are paying a fair price without the need for bartering. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
