the amazing things you'll be doing
The Kingdom of Cambodia has, in recent times, become somewhat like a phoenix arising from ashes. Stability in the country has ensured that travellers are once again able to experience some incredible sights, which were off-limits for a number of years.

The revitalised capital of Phnom Penh is home to Wat Phnom and the Silver Pagoda in the Royal Palace - reminders of the city's imperial legacy. However, you cannot help but be shocked by the sombre reminders of the gruesome reign of Pol Pot, when you visit 'The 'Killing Fields' of Choeung Ek and the Tuol Sleng Prison Museum. In contrast, the Phnom Penh waterfront, at the confluence of the Tonle Sap and the mighty Mekong River, is a picture of tranquillity. The Great Lake (Tonle Sap) is the largest body of freshwater in South East Asia, and home to a fascinating fishing village.

Siem Reap is a perfect base for discovering Cambodia's magnificent temples. Among the greatest archaeological sites in the world, they evoke images of an empire that turned from Hinduism to Buddhism over 500 years ago. Ta Prohm has been left in the same state as it was when 'rediscovered' by the French a century and a half ago, with its structures and foundation reclaimed by the jungle.

how this holiday makes a difference
Experience Cambodia through the eyes of a local, as your Cambodian tour leader gives you a first-hand insight into the colourful and diverse tapestry that make up their homeland. Wandering around the amazing Angkor complex in Cambodia gives travellers an awareness of these important and yet fragile cultural relics and the importance of them being preserved and protected, so that they can be experienced and appreciated by future generations.

The concept of tourism in Cambodia is fairly recent when compared to other countries in Asia and, to support programs there, this operator is training tour leaders on a variety of issues, from environmental awareness to First Aid. This not only assists in the conduct of a tour but also provides leaders with important life skills. By only employing tour leaders born and bred in the regions they visit, they are supporting local economies. Through offering employment and steady revenue, tourism can ultimately make a real positive difference to local communities.

There are several other pro-active steps to help this country re-build its shattered economy. While travelling through the country you are encouraged to patronise local tourism initiatives, such as a massage centre run by blind people and an artisan shop selling artefacts made by handicapped people, many of whom are landmine victims. Your tour leader is also encouraged to recount the country's recent history, and some have their own, very personal and sometimes tragic stories to tell. Cambodia is a classic case of a destination requiring new industries, such as tourism, to fast track its recovery. By visiting Cambodia, you are directly helping with this recovery. By joining this tour, you are travelling with a company that works closely with the locals, all the way from tour leaders and booking agencies to bus drivers and vehicle companies.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
