the amazing things you'll be doing
Our adventure begins in the beautiful Susa Valley, just above Claviere. This area, known as Monti Della Luna (Mountains of the Moon), has rolling hills covered with a multitude of wild flowers, beautiful larch forests and picturesque mountain lakes.
During this exciting and varied week we get the opportunity to ride through spectacular mountain scenery and explore historic rural villages. We stay in a selection of quiet traditional villages and get the opportunity to try out the delicious food and wine of the region.
We will be riding on average 4 to 6 hours each day. Confident novice riders are fine, as for most of the trip we will have 2 guides so, if necessary, we can split into 2 groups. We tend to use Spanish or Argentinean horses and either English trekking or western saddles - ideal for a long day in the saddle. Each day your horse will be prepared for you but you are welcome to help.

As a part of our continued commitment to responsible tourism, we operate this trip in a way that aims to reduce impacts and to give as much back as possible to the local communities. The horse riding centre includes an area of organic cultivation that provides not only produce for the local community but also with an experimental area it grows both aromatic and medicinal herbs from the mountains. We will also stay at a centre for the development of ecological education and awareness.
Our trip to the Fort of Fenestrelle helps to sustain the reconstruction and preservation of this symbolic monument. Guides employed for the tour of the trip work for the foundation that is responsible for this work. The trip will visit the natural reserves of Gran Bosco and of Rocciavre, while there are no entry fees you are welcome to make donations direct to the park offices which will be used for the up keep of the parks. The operator is locally based and we have worked with this operator to help train staff in all aspects of their jobs, thereby investing in the people to help improve their knowledge and future prospects. This included Responsible Tourism training. Our leaders are all locally based and whilst already committed to Responsible Tourism, have received training and get additional refresher training on a regular basis. They will give a briefing to the clients on issues such as how to help understand local communities and how to help reduce the impact and maximise the benefits to the local communities from the visit. We use all locally owned and run accommodation on this trip. This contributes directly to the local communities as local staff are employed and locally produced and sourced goods are bought for the accommodation benefiting the wider community. Where possible we use hotel’s sourcing only organic produce. Our maximum group size is 10. This is to minimise the impacts of the group and we stick to broader bridleways and tracks avoiding environmental impact to smaller footpaths. We have at our offices worked to reduce our carbon footprint through a reduction of energy use and energy conservation measures. We also actively reduce the waste produced by having active reduction and recycling policies in place. We run annual staff workshops on Responsible Tourism. Global warming is a reality and to help you make a difference by reducing the carbon dioxide that is produced when you travel we offer a chance to carbon balance your flights. We encourage all our clients to do this and do so for all our staff travel. Go on do your bit! |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
