the amazing things you'll be doing
The whitewashed villages of the Alpujarra are some of the most delightful and picturesque in Spain. We've chosen to visit the lesser frequented villages at the Eastern end of the Alpujarra, on the edge of the spectacular 'Sierra Nevada Park Natural'.

Our walk follows traditional trails that link these secluded mountain villages and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

You'll find yourself walking under trees laden with mulberries, apricots, almonds, plums, olives and other fruit and you may have to stop every now and then to let a local shepherd pass with his flock.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Malaga - Trevélez. Arrival in Malaga where you'll be met and transferred to the village of Trevélez. At 1,550m the highest village in Spain and our base for the week.
Day 2:Trevélez. Walk out of the village along a beautiful path beside the river, climbing gently towards its source. The fast-flowing river is made up entirely from snow melt, dashing its way over smooth rocks down the glaciated valley.
Day 3:Trevélez - Juviles. Spend some time in the lower part of Trevélez before walking to the delightful village of Juviles. Don't be surprised if we encounter shepherds with their flocks using the same paths. Relax with a beer and tapas before exploring the village prior to returning to Trevélez.
Day 4:Granada. We have the opportunity to make an excursion to the fascinating city of Granada and visit the Alhambra, perhaps the greatest of all Moorish monuments in Andalucia.
Day 5:Trevélez - Portugos. Walking out of the village we wend our way through pine forests, crossing flood gorges and gently making our way to the picturesque village of Portugos where we discover a beautifully renovated church in a traditional Alpujarran village.
Day 6:Trevélez - Penabon. Today we climb to the nearby peak of Penabon affording us magnificent views of the valley below and much of the Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada range.
Day 7:Poquiera George. We take an excursion to the beautiful villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capalleira, situated within the spectacular Poquiera Gorge. We have time to explore the narrow streets and relax in some of the local bars to enjoy the excellent tapas on offer.
Day 8:Malaga. Today you are transferred back to Malaga for your onward flights.

Very good (more)
small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.
highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2007 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - the largest awards of their kind in the world, and organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.

how this holiday makes a difference
When most people think of Spain, responsible travel is probably the last thing on their minds. But just an hour or so from the mayhem of the Mediterranean resorts life in the Alpujarras remains staunchly traditional and on this trip you can get away from the crowds and give something back to the local people.

We stay in small family owned lodges (usually only 6-8 bedrooms) in relatively remote communities where there are very few possible sources of income. By staying in these lodges we can ensure that the money generated by our visit goes directly to local families. In addition all meals are taken at small local restaurants or in the lodges; again ensuring money goes straight into the community.

During the trip there are many opportunities for scenic walks – most of which are led by our tour leaders who take active steps to ensure our groups behave in an environmentally responsible manner such as sticking to established trails, not leaving anything behind or removing any plants. The trip also visits the UNESCO world heritage sight of Alhambra where our entrance fees contribute towards the ongoing maintenance and conservation of the palace.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
