introduction to Cloudforest holiday to Manu National Park

Our 5,7 or 9 day camping tours take you from Cuzco to the very heart of the Manu National Park and into another world.

Manu, situated in Peru's remote south-eastern corner, protects some of the world's most important jungle wilderness.

Not only is it the country's largest tropical rainforest reserve, it also harbours two other distinct ecosystems: cloud forest (home to the bright red cock-of-the-rock and the rare spectacled bear) and puna (a high altitude tundra-like environment).

Accessible from Cuzco by road and river or light aircraft, this unique biosphere reserve covers an area of nearly five million acres and has become known for its pristine rainforest flora and the profusion of its fauna.Manu harbours around a thousand species of birds (including seven species of macaw), hundreds of tree species, 13 species of monkey and dozens of other mammal species including jaguar and giant otter, both listed as highly endangered. Other endangered species found in Manu include the black caiman and harpy eagle.

how this holiday makes a difference
It is our policy to carefully dispose of all waste in this environmentally sensitive area. All non-organic waste is carried out and organic waste is composted at the town of Atalaya or buried at a suitable depth. Sewage and waste is treated in filter beds. We are careful to practice responsible behaviour in this fragile environment. There is no hunting, no fishing, and no plant collection. There is control on boat size and noise pollution.

Food we eat is purchased in Cusco and we use food products with as little packaging as possible, and encourage cooking with Andean products. We cook with gas and use recyclable glass as opposed to plastic wherever possible. Water is carried in large containers we re-use,and we use re-usable Tupperware boxes for packed lunches and paper wrapping instead of plastic where possible. Staff are from local communities and are treated fairly and paid a fair wage.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
