the amazing things you'll be doing
After trekking the Inca trail, relaxing on the Galapagos Islands or flying over the famous 'Nazca Lines'. We invite you to experience the real Peru on an interactive cultural adventure. We give you a unique opportunity to live with a local Peruvian family and see how the Incas would have lived hundreds of years ago. Many of the Peruvian people living in country areas still live under the same physical hardships as the Inca and pre Inca people would have done.
If you have ever wanted to get off the tourist route and live with a family in Peru and experience the real culture behind the scenes then this is for you.
We are an organisation aimed at improving the basic living conditions of families and communities, in third world countries and underprivileged communities, while giving you an unforgettable cultural experience.
We invite you to be part of a small team that will be building cooking stoves in these highland villages in Peru. Our interactive cultural adventures are designed for 'short durations' so that you can incorporate them into your holiday. You will experience the complete satisfaction of making the lives of a local family in Peru much more comfortable and see exactly where your money went and what it was used for.
By travelling with us you will be making a difference and helping local Peruvians to smile. Most Peruvian families cook in a small rock and mud hut on an open fire, using 3 large rocks to rest their cooking pots. The walls are black with soot from the fire and smoke stings their eyes and poisons their lungs. Thousands of Peruvian women spend up to 8hrs a day cooking in these conditions. Why?

day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Lima Arrive Lima |
| Day 2: | Cajamarca Transfer to the airport for your flight to Cajamarca. The famous ransom room where the Inca king ‘Atahualpa’ was forced to fill twice with silver and once with gold holds testament to the Spanish conquistadores in Cajamarca. Bath in the hot thermal springs or take a afternoon walk up the historic staircase of Santa Palonia for some great panoramic views over the historic city. |
| Day 3: | Blue Poncho Lodge We depart by bus heading north toward the village community of Chota. Crossing over a 4000m pass with spectacular views of the Andes mountain range we descend into the fertile and isolated valleys of northern Peru. |
| Day 4: | Community Lodge A short walk through the local markets in Chota is generally a good introduction to the local lifestyle and shopping habits. Open fruit, vegetable and meat markets abound with country and city folk alike as they go about their daily shopping. We travel from Chota to the Community Lodge. After lunch we begin building the chimney for the cooking stove. |
| Day 5-6: | Local Family You will have a very unique experience to visit a local family in their own home. You will likely be the first foreign visitor to have ever visited your host family’s home. Your host family’s excitement will be easily matched by your curious interest. You will have the rewarding experience of improving the health and comfort of their host family forever. Very close bonds of appreciation and affection usually develop between the visitor and the host family. |
| Day 7: | Cajamarca We depart the lodge early and return to Cajamarca. Overnight in Cajamarca. |
| Day 8: | Lima Retun to Lima on the early morning flight. |
travellers' tales
The tour was fantastic. It felt like a very genuine experience with a Peruvian family. It gave me exactly what so many of us want when we go on holiday: being able to see what other people's lives are like in a culture different to our own. (more)
how this holiday makes a difference
|
It was very satisfying to watch the family run down the paddock to watch the smoke coming out of their new chimney. The family is now able to cook and eat in the same room; they were not able to do this before.
The mother can talk to the rest of the family while she prepares food. They are able to hang pictures on the kitchen wall and makes shelves to hang things on; previously the black soot prevented this. Timber consumption is reduced by approximately 50%. This reduces pressure on native forest and families do not require as much timber to cook each meal. This also reduces the distance families need to walk to collect timber. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
