the amazing things you'll be doing
Koh Yao Noi ‘Community based Ecotourism Club’ was established over 12 years ago. The people of Koh Yao Noi are traditional fisher families. This award-winning program offers a combination homestay, fishing expeditions with local host families, exploring the beautiful white-sand islands of the Andaman sea, swimming, snorkeling, cultural exchange and conservation!

The inspiring history of the fishers of Koh Yao Noi includes a heroic struggle to keep illegal trawlers out of their fishing waters - protecting the local marine environment and saving the community fishing stocks. A great story to share during a fresh seafood dinner!
Optional Sea kayaking programme: Paddle to idyllic islands and explore sea caves, from US $80 (1 day). This includes all equipment, briefing and safety session, snacks, refreshments, sunset seafood dinner and transfer to hotel in Phuket.

Please note: Koh Yao Noi is a Muslim community. Your hosts are looking forward to welcoming you. However, they kindly request that guests wear modest clothing while on the island (bathing costumes during boat trips are fine) and refrain from alcohol in the homestay.

Please note: We can arrange this group for independent couples, but this will be expensive as costs cannot be shared.

Family holidays: Our homestays are a favorite with families. The guest family stays in a homestay with a Thai family and participates in all kinds of activities - there are plenty of 'gentle' options suitable for kids and parents. Also, activities can be tailored depending on what particular interests guests have.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Starting from Phuket, we go to the pier and take a ferry to Koh Yao Noi. The one-hour ferry ride takes us to the island. The villagers welcome us and introduce us to Koh Yao Noi. We can go sightseeing on the island and watch the beautiful sunset over the Andaman sea before returning home with our host families. The evening is a great time to meet the family, share photographs and learn a little Thai. (L,D)
Day 2:Today, we go fishing with our host families. We will learn how local life is intimately connected to the rich natural resources of the Andaman Sea and see how our families practice environment friendly fishing. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach. In the evening we can relax again at our homestays. (B,L,D)
Day 3:Today, we wake early in the morning. We can go to see rubber processing, the main industry of Southern Thailand, or we can have breakfast at the colourful local market. Later, we go on a boat trip to the islands surrounding Koh Yao Noi. We can soak up the beautiful environment, learn about coastal resource management from our local guide, swim and relax. Alternatively, we can go trekking in the inland forest. In the evening, we have a Farewell Party to share experiences with our hosts. (B,L,D)
Day 4:Leave for Phuket in the morning. (Optional sea kayaking trip can be arranged). (B)
how this holiday makes a difference
Thailand homestay holiday, PhuketThe Koh Yao Noi Community based Ecotourism Club has been operational for over 12 years, and is considered to be a ‘best-practice’ example of community based ecotourism in Thailand and overseas.

KYN CBT Club represents and directly benefits 35 local families with indirect benefits for over 4000 people, including local schools and other institutions. The direction of tourism development is decided by the group, with careful consideration for environmental, cultural, social and economic sustainability.

The CBT Club harnessed tourism as a tool to reverse a social and environmental catastrophe being created by the encroachment of large-scale commercial trawlers into their local fishing grounds. This Illegal fishing was destroying the environment, and threatening the livelihoods of local people, who rely on fish stocks to feed their families. The KYN CBT Club harnessed tourism as a bridge to bring these issues to the attention of the outside world, eventually forcing the government to enforce the law and protect local rights. Through this work, KYN CBT club supported sustainable coastal resource management, helped to protect the precious environment of Phang Nga Bay, and made a real and tangible contribution to the food security of the entire Muslim fishers’ island.

Through CBT, Club members have received additional income representing up to 10% of their annual income. 10% of all income is directed into a community fund which supports various conservation initiatives in Koh Yao Noi. The club worked to gently educate guests about culturally sensitive behaviour on their Muslim island. They are a successful example of tourism as a ‘green bridge’ catalyzing cultural exchange, friendship and mutual respect.

Koh Yao Noi CBT Club has been assisted since its inception by the Responsible Ecological Social Tours Project (REST), a local Thai NGO. REST provide training and assistance for community members. We also help to identify and reach the best types of guests, so that CBT can be a fun and respectful experience for all. Travelers can go to Koh Yao Noi on their own if they wish. However, we have trained English speaking ‘Tour Facilitators’, who accompany our guests and assist with translation, so you can get the most out of the experience.

Koh Yao Noi ‘CBT’ club and our organisation have been recognized nationally and internationally through awards such as the prestigious 2002 National Geographic Traveler and Conservation International World Legacy Award for Destination Stewardship,’ the Thai Airways Kinare Award and the Thai Homestay Standard.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
