the amazing things you'll be doing
A visit to the beautiful Northeastern part of Brazil is nothing less than diverse and unusual. The picture of lush green tropical vegetation quickly disappears as one enters the semi-arid region of the 'Sertão".

The long dirt roads with tall granite mountains on the background lead to many secrets holding Brazil's past. In there, history is found and re-told in the most simplistic and unexpected way. Petroglyphs and rock art about 5.000 years old, describe in few traces the past that once occupied the region. Amongst those we find: dinosaurs prints, large mammals fossils, drawings of birds and animals from thousands of years ago, possibly from when the region was covered by a shallow inland sea.

Today, the local communities struggle to survive on the little the land can produce. The farming will consist on the growing of the manioc root; some locals resort to the caring of goats, one of the few animals that can endure very dry conditions.Nevertheless this experience is certainly graded as one of the most unique ways to see Brazil.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrive in the town of Natal capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. We suggest the rest of this day to be spent by relaxing at the hotel or on the beach in order to get acclimated after a long day travelling.
Day 2:A visit to the city of Natal and the local market is very needed and surely interesting. This region is known for the arts crafts, painted pottery and leather goods. During the WW ll the United States had kept an army base in this town, today this is a site filled with curious visitors.
Day 3:Early departure to Inga and Cariri locations deep inside the sertão. The Inga Rock was found not long ago by a geologist and is one of the largest archaeological monuments of Brazil. On this rock one can see drawings and engravings done by possibly indigenous people that once inhabited the region. We will finish the day at the Cariri at a local farm.
Day 4-5:These days will be spent hiking and exploring this rich area. The Cariri region is filled with hills made out of granite gathering exotic vegetation, unusual rock formations, and a diverse wildlife only found in this region; I.e.: Emus, wildcats, rodents, various snakes and birds are some of the commonly found species.
Day 6:Leaving the Cariri this trip proceeds towards the town of Caruaru known as the “handcraft capital of Sertão” and the place one can experience the local culture at its best.
Day 7:As we leave Caruaru the next stop will be a well-known fishing village of Porto de Ganlinhas and a good place to enjoy the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean; continuing then to the Historical town of Olinda, considered by UNESCO as one of its world heritage sites.
Day 8:All day visiting Olinda, artisans’ shops and sites.
Day 9:The trip proceeds into the small town of Igarassu house of an animal refuse centre, followed by the Island of Itamaraca, historically known for having a fort built by the Dutch in 1631. A must stop on the way back to Natal is a visit to the Manatee Research Centre.
Day 10:Transfer out to the airport.
Don't leave it too late!
Please note that not many airlines fly to Brazil and flights can be expensive (and difficult to find) if you leave it too late to book. We recommend that flights are booked at least 3 months prior to departure. For holidays and Carnaval you'll need to plan even further in advance. The longer you leave it, the more expensive it'll be.

This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. how this holiday makes a difference
Under the supervision of Dr. Eduardo Bagnoli and strong financial support of some Brazilian organizations “The Soledade Rock” is today a local attraction visited by many travellers.

The Inga community have proudly found an immediate way to generate income for the future generations. The creation of a small museum and a store selling local crafts have helped stimulate the economy, promote sustainability and reinforce the necessity to preserve the environment. Local operators provide training and work closely with residents in exchange for their invaluable knowledge.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
