introduction to São Paulo. Escape for a few days
Escape the city for a few days. Choose from white water rafting, boating, rappelling, Tyrolese, boiacross, trekking, horseback riding, swimming, wildlife viewing and cataloguing.
This trip takes place in a small town of Brotas, 3hrs away from the city of São Paulo. It is usually a great weekend escape option for those staying in the big city on business or for those passing by. Brotas is a small yet very humble town about 160 years old and with fewer than 8.000 habitants.
Local residents are descendants of Italian and Portuguese settlers that immigrated to work on the coffee plantations, once the only form of economy in the area.
Today the local community, no longer coffee growers, is slowly building its economy on sustainable tourism. Over 10 years ago a group of friends together with the local community gave birth to the first conservation movement in the region. This action has single out the city of Brotas amongst many in Brazil and has awarded one of its local operators the Certificate of Environmental Conservation – ISO 14001.
Brotas's vast natural resource embraces a diverse and fragile ecosystem consisting of green mountains, lush valleys, many rivers and creeks leading to as many as 70 waterfalls as well as being home to many wildlife species. Each day in Brotas is filled with many outdoor activities, naturally all ending up in a very wet and muddy way. We believe it is one of the best ways to have a great holiday.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
The local community is very much involved in the maintenance of its environment. The majority of its economy relies heavily on the revenues coming from tourism, therefore is imperative that everyone seek together a common interest. Locals residents work in hotels, restaurants, retail stores as well as field guides or other; even the long lost art crafts and homemade desserts have been brought back to the delight of many palates. Today more than ever there is the need and the desire by residents to promote their beautiful region as a way of insuring future economic success to many generations to come.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
