how this holiday makes a difference
|
Through choosing to travel with us you are assisting local businesses, job creation, cultural development programs and various environmental groups. Some of the various projects we are proud to support on this trip are: The Rally to Read which invests in the improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching of literacy skills in rural schools throughout South Africa, and the Chipgingale Wildlife Sanctuary based in Bulawayo Zimbabwe.
We believe strongly in low impact tourism and so during this trip we use existing locally owned facilities. By using locally owned and run facilities we are helping the local communities that we visit. We reduce deforestation by avoiding unnecessary use of scarce firewood and using gas for cooking. At Mto Wa Mbu travellers have a chance to interact with the locals in the busy market and can contribute to the local community For every week that our passengers spend in Africa, we plant a tree in Kenya through the Woodlands 2000 Trust, a local NGO. The Woodlands 2000 Trust is a wonderful project that provides seeds and seedlings with planting materials as well as land-planning, tree survival and woodlot management services. It aims to increase reforestation and bio-diversify in semi-arid regions, and also to create sustainable and profitable tree products micro-industries that contribute to alleviating poverty. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
