day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1-2: | Cairo. A vibrant assault on the senses, Cairo is a city like no other. Immerse yourself in the madness of Khan al-Khalili, Egypt's most famous souq, wander past priceless treasures at the Egyptian Museum or soak up the spice-laden atmosphere of Islamic Cairo. We also head to Giza to see the Sphinx and Pyramids. |
| Day 3-5: | Aswan. Get a taste of the fascinating local culture during a traditional lunch at a Nubian village. Afterwards, a camel ride through dramatic dune scenery allows us to view the abandoned monastery of St Simeon. We stroll around the island of Elephantine where children and goats rule the streets and sail by felucca down the Nile on a magical overnight journey. There is also the option to take a side trip to the temple of Abu Simbel. |
| Day 6-7: | Luxor. Known as Thebes to the ancient Egyptians, this city has been home to the treasures of the Pharaohs for centuries. Take a donkey ride to the Valley of the Kings, home to the well-preserved tombs of the Egyptian Pharaohs and wander through the spectacular Karnak temple. Later, you may like to head to the Winter Palace to watch the sun set peacefully over the Nile. |
| Day 8: | Cairo. A sunrise homecoming to Egypt's pulsating heart heralds the end of our adventure. For those with extra time, roam through the walled citadel for wonderful views over the city, pick up some exotic trinkets at one of the many the souqs or escape the hazy madness of the inner city with a farewell promenade along the banks of the Nile. |

how this holiday makes a difference
|
Egypt is an extraordinary country and exploring it with us will get you travelling there with the locals, learning about their way of life and supporting a many local communities as possible. In true Intrepid style most accommodation is in locally owned, small guesthouses. Local transport is the main mode of transport, allowing immersion into Egyptian daily life and interaction with local people. Your leader and the local guides we use along the way will help to break down barriers in your interactions with local people.
The itinerary includes a boat trip on the Nile River in a traditional felucca. This supports an ancient mode of transport as well as supporting the Nubian crew in their way of life. At the end of our journey travellers may donate any unwanted clothing, medicines and bandages, which are distributed to appropriate local charities. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
