introduction to Costa Rica building project
Costa Rica is part of the tiny, geographical bridge between North and South America. It's a perfect introduction to tropical Latin America. To travel here is to place yourself in the middle of a breathtaking variety of tropical plant and wildlife, all the while enjoying your surroundings with relaxed and friendly people.
Following a week of Spanish lessons, our overseas volunteers are engaged in teaching English, building homes and care work with street children in the suburbs of San José and the surrounding mountains. Conservation projects to counteract the effects of deforestation and wildlife devastation are carried out under the canopy of the rainforests, on the beaches, or at reserves and national parks.
Weekends are for taking in Costa Rica's natural wonders: climbing volcanoes, white-water rafting through canyons and kayaking, or lazing on pristine white beaches that inspired the Spaniards to christen this country 'rich coast'.Many rural Costa Rican families live in homes lacking adequate sanitation and safe weather protection. Volunteers work with Habitat for Humanity International and other organisations to build homes for them. It's a cycle of grassroots activity, as these families carry on the goodwill by helping the next family.
After your complimentary Spanish lessons to help prepare you for the work ahead, you work with local families and use local materials to dig and pour foundations, build walls, install roofs or build septic tanks and drainage systems. The local families provide you breakfast, dinner, a bed and an interesting insight into Costa Rican culture. You might not see the entire house constructed, but the reward comes from working alongside the families whose lives you are helping to change. You might also get the chance to give an insight into your own culture by teaching English to the local community.

traveller reviews for Costa Rica building project
I enjoyed my experiences with everyone and learned more about what it is to be mindful of others. (more)
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
Costa Rica is a wealth of biodiversity and has much to offer volunteers interested in nature in all its glory. With all the natural wealth, there are still 150,000 families still living below poverty level.
Volunteers are needed to help this problem by working with local and international charities to build homes for these families. Get in touch with this country's beauty and work to build a better life for its people as well. In addition to making an impact on the lives of the families who get these homes, volunteers have the rare opportunity to live in and become a part of Costa Rica's communities; an experience that you just won't get as traditional tourist or even a backpacker. As well as volunteers, a charity has been set up to donate materials and other needs to all projects we support and these gifts are made on a bi-annual basis. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
