the amazing things you'll be doing
Honduras, in Central America, is a land of rich, diverse terrain and culture. It boasts beautiful white coastal and island beaches, warm Caribbean seas, tropical rainforests and mountains, plus oodles of coffee and bananas. Hondurans run more than 20 national parks, havens for exploring ancient indigenous ruins, hiking through tropical forests or tackling water sports. Beyond the stunning scenery is an intriguing cultural atmosphere with indigenous groups living alongside those of mixed indigenous/Spanish descent.

Become a part of this country by volunteering abroad. Your help is greatly needed as Honduras was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and has an ongoing process to rebuild its infrastructure. Building classrooms and homes, teaching English, conservation in national parks, providing health care and reporting news are highly valued. To help you make the most of your time, as a volunteer you are also given Spanish language training on arrival.

You can become part of the editorial staff at Honduras' only English-language newspaper and develop your budding journalism skills or contribute your writing expertise. This award-winning newspaper has subscribers in 76 countries, and is a favourite among the local tourist and foreign resident communities. Your assignments may include reporting on a variety of topics ranging from politics to travel to current affairs. Your work might take you out into the field for a bit of research or require you to help with translations, proofreading and editing alongside the 4 other permanent staff members.

volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
This small country is rich in natural beauty but one of the poorest countries in the Americas. Whether in the capital city of Tegucigalpa or the rural communities in the remotest parts of the country, volunteers are involved in helping Hondurans to improve their own lives through helping to rebuild homes, teaching, and through the written word.

Volunteers are helping to bring social, political and every day life issues to light through nationally circulated English speaking newspaper. The opportunity not only helps the newspapers by providing them with much needed research assistants, writers, and photographers, it also gives the volunteer the chance to learn new skills, polish old ones, and make a CV really stand out. Living with host families in the local communities gives the volunteers the kind of cultural experience not achievable with package holidays or even backpacking.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
