introduction to Costa Rica honeymoon

Costa Rica is the perfect honeymoon destination for those looking for luxury, nature and adventure. Over 27% of the country is designated as a National Park, biological reserve, wildlife refuge or some other category of protected area. The standard of accommodation here is extremely high and the hotels we have chosen for this itinerary have all been handpicked for their suitability for honeymooners.

Your honeymoon begins at Xandari, set in the midst of a coffee plantation it has spectacular views of the central valley of Costa Rica. Each villa is individually designed to take advantage of the views and the cool breezes. Lapa Rios is an award-winning ecolodge on the Osa Peninsula located in a private nature reserve of 1,000 acres and has incredible views across the coastline. Flor Blanca is a secluded romantic haven for those who want to stay in comfort whilst enjoying adventure and excitement in a tropical beach destination.

The Osa Peninsula: An area of immense beauty the Osa Peninsula is one of the most remote areas of Costa Rica. If you want to get away from people and enjoy the rainforest this is the place to head for. Your first view will be of what looks like a floating island - an intricate mix of blues and greens sheltered by long graceful trees. You will need at least three days to see this area properly. Furthermore you have a choice of wonderful lodges, some of which are amongst the top in Costa Rica. Others are more adventure based but all are supremely comfortable and right in the middle of the wilderness.

Corcovado National Park: The National Geographic has called this Park "the most biologically intense place on earth" - deserted beaches, waterfalls, birds and wildlife - it is exceptionally beautiful. The heights and density of the trees have been compared to the Amazon, whilst it is also one of the few places outside the Amazon where you have a good chance of seeing flocks of Scarlet Macaws in their natural habitat. There is even a chance of seeing a jaguar - there are very few areas in Central America that are so untouched.

Highlights include:
  • The waterfalls and nature pools of the Xandari Estate
  • Surfing and pampering at the exclusive Flor Blanca
  • The remote Osa Peninsula with its incredible wildlife including sloth’s and monkeys
  • One of our favourite hotels - Lapa Rios
  • Wandering through the many rainforest trails listening to the sounds of nature

    best time to go
The dry season is from November to the end of April. May can often be a good time to go as it is the end of the season and much quieter but it is very hot and humid. The rainy season starts at the beginning of June through to October. It does not rain all day but often clouds over at lunchtime and there are downpours in the afternoon. There is a risk of hurricane during August, September and October in the Caribbean coasts of Central America.

traveller reviews for Costa Rica honeymoon

The pristine primary rainforests of the Osa Pininsular and in particular the almost spiritual retreat that Luna Lodge offers was by far the highlight.  (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
Over twenty-seven percent of Costa Rica is designated as National Park, biological reserve, wildlife refuge or some other category of protected area. Most of the hotels and lodges we use in this itinerary are based within one of these designated areas and take their responsibilities towards the environment very seriously.

As a tailor-made operator we try wherever possible to use locally owned hotels, local guides and transport owned and operated by local people. All of the guides we use are trained to ensure that the guests understand the nature of the environment and minimise the impact that they may have.

Hotels with an emphasis on sustainability are also something we try to promote. By staying at Lapa Rios Ecolodge, guests support the conservation of the rainforest and provide direct employment and income to more than 45 families in the area. Among Lapa Rios’ Mission is their aim to protect and preserve 1000 acres of primary and secondary rain forest in the Lapa Rios private reserve and utilise tourism to acquire and protect endangered rain forest.

As a tour operator we have supported World Land Trust in their project to save tropical forests of the Osa Peninsular, a hot spot for biodiversity that was threatened by a major highway an inappropriate tourism development.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
