introduction to Community work with children in Rio de Janeiro

If the bright colours don’t overwhelm you when you land in Brazil then the even brighter smiles of the children certainly will. This is definitely not a country for anyone who likes the quiet life, with action at every turn! There’s certainly plenty on offer on this project which uses a heady mix of dance, theatre and music to support the city’s vulnerable children. Working with youngsters from a number of favelas (urban slums) your efforts will play a valuable part in helping the children on a project desperately short of resources, while allowing you to soak up the rich vibes of a pulsating city. Don’t forget of course, our TEFL certification is included to make sure you’re fully prepared.

Your project is based in Rio where you will be living and work in the local communities. You will be living and working in the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Rio de Janeiro. Rio is a culturally diverse city with lots to see and do in your spare time. It is in a geographically stunning location and deserves the title of cidade maravilhosa (marvellous city). It is surrounded by lush peaks and amazing beaches. It is a city of contrasts where the rich live alongside the poor. The Cariocas - inhabitants of Rio - are free-spirited, welcoming and with a love of Samba and celebration are always ready to party.

Brazil encompasses all aspect of the Latin spirit. It is a seductive place and is also a country of staggering beauty - its scenery is guaranteed to take your breath away. There is also an intoxicating rhythm of life - that is famous the world over. From the bronzed bodies of its beaches to the unexplored wonders of its rainforests, Brazil is a destination that has to be seen to be believed and experienced to understand.

You will be staying in a volunteer house, which has stunning views over the city and a great base to explore this marvellous city. Please book your flight to arrive into Rio de Janeiro on the advertised arrival date to ensure your airport pickup.
the project
These projects are both aimed at providing early childhood education and support to young at-risk children from a number of Rio's favelas (urban slums). These children come from extremely disadvantaged communities and so the assistance they receive through education, physical and mental health, meals, clothing and recreational activities is invaluable. The projects give the individuals the chance to consider positive ways in which they can influence their local community and other young people rather that to get involved in the gang culture and violence that Rio has become known for.

There are a number of placements we work with that all focus on different aspects whether it is working with arts and crafts, dance, sports or music your talents can be put to use. Volunteers are needed to continue this great work and enable the centres to provide the children even more activities. As there are many families who have access to the facilities there is often not enough staff to give lots of care and attention to the children, which is vital especially in the first years.

Activities include: recreational activities, music, dance, arts and crafts, sports, theatre workshops. You will also help prepare food for the children, and generally assisting with educational development. You may also need to help with general cleaning and facility maintenance, and not be afraid to change a nappy/diaper.

Skills required: Basic Brazilian Portuguese and/or Intermediate Spanish is strongly recommended, otherwise volunteers may find communication difficult. If you do not know any, please make the effort to learn before starting your project, you can also join lessons at the accommodation in country. A love of children is needed for this project, as is a strong heart due to the nature of the work and the situation these children are in. The children can be naturally disruptive and at times difficult to handle. This project therefore requires a lot of patience and understanding.
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
We believe that travel can change lives! Travelling can change you as a person and, if done responsibly, can have a profound effect on the people that you meet and the places that you visit. We want as many people as possible to experience the heart and soul of another culture in the way that we have, and in doing so, help them to make a positive and lasting impact on our world.

Rio de Janeiro is commonly referred to as “A Cidade Maravilhosa” and the marvellous city really does live up to its name, not only during Carnival celebrations. With its fabulous beaches, the Maracanã stadium; one of the world’s largest football stadiums, its samba music and most importantly its marvellous people, it is an event in itself. However, Rio de Janeiro has a different side to it as well: one of poverty and violence. Those individuals most vulnerable and affected by the downsides to this ostensible paradise are the country’s little ones. In order to give at least some of these disadvantaged kids hope and the chance for a better future, we have teamed up with a local project striving to get them off the streets.

While volunteering on this project you will find that members of staff are overly dedicated, but resources are limited. Your ingenuity and initiative is needed to create extracurricular leisure activities and an enjoyable learning environment for the kids. It is this type of proactive approach that makes our volunteers so invaluable not only for the project as a whole, but for each individual child that gets the opportunity to learn, play and look into the future.

You’ll stay in a shared room in a locally owned guesthouse ensuring that you directly support the local community while you’re there. You’ll also be supported by your local in-country coordinator; Felipe who with his team is best placed to understand the specific economic, social and developmental needs of Brazil.

On average 48% of your placement fee is distributed in-country for the services included with your placement (i.e. Local support, Food, Transport & Accommodation) meaning that the local communities are directly benefiting from your travels to their country. The remaining funds are required to cover the administration costs associated with sourcing, training, marketing and coordinating your travel experience. We do not give a financial contribution to this or any of our projects as we believe that money is rarely the answer to complicated development issues; if it was, the poverty problems in the world would be getting better! Short-term aid relief can cause aid-reliance and financial instability and the corruption seen in many developing countries means the guarantee of your money going to the heart of the cause is massively reduced. From our experience (and by learning from our mistakes) projects benefit far greater more from a sustainable framework to ensure they develop rather than short-term financial aid relief.

If money is paid directly to projects then they may become dependent on that income. If that country or project becomes unpopular, or through restrictions in the opportunity to travel to that country, the money dries up and they are no longer able to continue with their work. Supplying projects with enthusiastic volunteers creates a constant supply of helpful hands and as they are not reliant on an income can continue without the assistance of the volunteer travellers, although significantly slower in achieving their goals.

Instead of giving money direct we operate a grants scheme from our Helping Hand Foundation. This is designed to allow all our partner projects to submit applications for funding to achieve a specific objective. In 2007 we have supported a number of partner projects including the installation of 20 toilets at a school in India, the construction of a community centre in Brazil and providing a radio communications unit for a turtle conservation project in Costa Rica.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
