the amazing things you'll be doing
View life through a tropical kaleidoscope
Sri Lanka is a pearl dropped into the Indian Ocean, situated slightly off the south east coast of India. Rolling plains at its shoreline grow to the tea plantations and finally to the hills of Piduruthalagala, where tropical forests flourish with indigenous wildlife.
If it's city life you want, Colombo will certainly awaken your senses. Our media projects offer budding journalists good stories and inspiration in the chaos of a metropolis sprawling with markets and overrun by rickshaws and cows. Sri Lanka's pace is gentler than that of neighbouring India, but Colombo is in a world of its own.
Outside of the city in the hill-country, our overseas volunteers live in serene rural villages, away from the bustle and noise. Here you could be taking part in valuable volunteer projects in schools, orphanages, animal sanctuaries or eco-tourism.
Teaching English
Teachers are needed near Colombo, Kandy, Bandarawela and Gampaha at a government school, a pre-school, a Buddhist temple, or a highly-developed language institute. Teach English to adults and children, play games, debate and role play. There's also sports, drama and music and informal evening lessons. Enjoy meals with your host family, plus shopping trips and social outings. April, August and December are festival months, so be prepared for breaks from your teaching work.
Experienced Teaching
Public sector employees in Sri Lanka are eager to develop their English skills to improve their futures. We work with an institute that provides valuable training opportunities to these workers, including English language development. Experienced teachers can conduct discussion groups, deliver lessons and develop teaching materials and resources. Teaching takes place in the evenings, so days are spent at a children's home where you can play games, plan activities and teach a bit of English.
You will receive TEFL training before you leave giving you the practical skills to use in the classroom.
Graduates of our online and weekend TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) courses have the opportunity to teach abroad and contribute to the development of the minds and futures of the people they teach. With the opportunity to learn English children improve their future prospects and adults are more likely to get better jobs.
Meeting new people is beneficial to everyone involved, creating cultural awareness and tolerance of new ideas and new people. Through teaching abroad you benefit from experiencing the country as a local, with many opportunities to get involved in school and community activities, making many friends along the way. Our short courses are tailor made with the traveller in mind and universally recognised to give you the necessary confidence and teaching basics to make you a successful teacher and citizen.

volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
Sri Lanka is working continuously to develop their tiny country into a land of opportunity. English skills are one main way that people outside the capitol of Colombo can secure jobs. Teachers are needed to help them reach their goals. Our dedication to these teaching placements sees a steady stream of volunteers coming into the school, so these people get the attention and instruction the deserve, while alleviating the problems the schools face, such as overcrowded classrooms and limited resources.
In addition to making an impact on the lives of the children the volunteer will teach, you have the rare opportunity to live in and become a part of Sri Lanka's communities; an experience that you just won't get as traditional tourist or even a backpacker. As well as volunteers, a charity has been set up to donate materials and other needs to all projects we support and these gifts are made on a bi-annual basis. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
