the amazing things you'll be doing
Based in the central highlands in La Esperanza we work with a project who are trying to make a difference to the next generation of young Hondurans. If you're committed about young children then you're needed to help care for those at ever expanding orphanages to give them a more prosperous future.
the project
The La Esperanza Centre hosts around forty disadvantaged children, their goal is to provide them attention, love, care, nutrition and shelter. INHFA has a feeding centre, a general medical clinic, and a distribution centre of humanitarian resources. Volunteers will be working closely alongside the children, some from very deprived areas. The main aims of the project are to help support the children with their development and help improve their quality of life. Through supporting projects aimed at training young people in specialist areas of industry, agriculture and the tertiary sector, volunteers will be helping children contribute to their country's integral development.

Due to a severe lack of funding, the school relies heavily on volunteer contributions. Through providing much needed enthusiasm, inspiration and practical skills volunteers can really make a difference in this environment and to the children's lives.

Beginners Spanish is a requirement as communication with the children will be beneficial to both parties. Working with orphaned and underprivileged children it is important that you are patient and understanding. In addition, a positive and enthusiastic attitude will help you get the most out of the project.
a day in a life of a volunteer
Between the hours of 8am and 4pm volunteers are needed to help support all aspects of the day to day running of the IHNFA centre. To help keep the children entertained there are a wide range of activities for volunteers to get involved with including cooking, carpentry, pottery and sewing. There is also the opportunity to teach English to the staff at the Centre as well as assist in the medical clinic. Many volunteers have been helping out on regenerating the centre, helping building and brightening up the rooms.
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
Volunteers directly contribute to the development of disadvantaged children in the local community. Due to a severe lack of funding, the local school in the small town of La Esperanza needs a steady stream of voluntary support for this project, which is locally owned to directly benefit the local community, both socially and economically. Through providing much needed enthusiasm, inspiration and practical skills volunteers can really make a difference to the local environment and local children's lives.

The La Esperanza Centre hosts around forty disadvantaged children. Its goal is to give them attention, love, care, nutrition and shelter. INHFA has a feeding centre, a general medical clinic, and a distribution centre of humanitarian resources. The role of volunteers is very hands-on as they work closely alongside the children; some from very deprived areas. The main responsible aims of the project are to help volunteers to leave a positive impact on the local community by supporting the children with their development and helping to improve their quality of life, which will in turn provide a brighter future for them and enable them to contribute to the efficiency of the local economy in the future. Through supporting worthwhile projects aimed at training young people in specialist areas of industry, agriculture and the tertiary sector, volunteers help children contribute to their country's integral development.

Direct support to help keep the children entertained is provided from volunteers through a wide range of activities including cooking, carpentry, pottery and sewing. There is also an opportunity to teach English to the staff at the Centre, to increase their chances of a brighter future, as well as assisting in the medical clinic. Many volunteers have been helping out on regenerating the centre, helping building and brightening up the rooms. Volunteers have the full support of a local in-country coordination team, who are fully trained staff that liaise with the locally owned project in-country and are on-hand 24/7. They provide volunteers with a full orientation on arrival.

The accommodation is locally owned and run by local staff. By staying in locally-owned accommodation volunteers are doing a great deal to benefit the local economy and cause a minimal impact on the environment. It is a comfortable homestay with a local family and includes local food in the form of two nutritious meals a day (breakfast and dinner), which are prepared by the host from locally sourced ingredients. Facilities are basic to reduce the impact on the environment. The maximum number of volunteers at any given time is eight, to ensure the project receives the aid it needs whilst not negatively affecting the environment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
