introduction to Peru mountaineering holiday

This tour features an eight-day trek amid some of the most stunning high-mountain scenery in the Andes. An alternative programme includes the ascent of Mount Pisco (5752m), a non-technical climb suitable for those with limited experience on snow and ice. Why not follow this with a week among the archaeological wonders and native charms of the Cuzco area. (See Cuzco Extension, CUS or CIT)

A bus journey through constantly-changing landscapes sees us climb from the barren Pacific coast up onto the high grasslands of the Andes and past a rank of snow peaks to Huaraz (3090 metres), our base for the next few days.

Offering dramatic panoramas of the Cordillera Blanca, this small city is the ideal place from which to explore the area before embarking on our trek.Things to do on free days include white-water rafting, biking in the nearby mountains, or a day-trip to the remote 3000-year-old ruins of Chavin.

Our trek features several of the finest views in Peru. After a gradual ascent of the Santa Cruz valley, we look from the first pass (Punta Union, 4750 m) across turquoise lakes and nearby glaciers to an array of awesome peaks. After descending to Vaqueria, Itinerary 1 takes us onto our highest pass (Punta Yanayaco, 4900 m).The pass affords stunning vistas on both sides, including the north face of Huascaran (6768 m) before descending to the Ulta valley and continuing to Huaraz.

how this holiday makes a difference
On our trek we use locally produced fresh produce, buying from villages where appropriate. In preference we choose local over imported goods, and encourage the use of Andean products in all our cooking. We pack out all non-organic waste and minimize this by using products with minimum packaging, leaving no litter and keeping all water sources clean, leaving camp-sites cleaner than we find them. We bury organic waste at a suitable depth.

When out on tour we encourage learning about Peru, the local culture of the teams we work with and the areas we pass through. Our guides hold informal talks with groups to inform about and discuss with them all aspects of local life. This helps understanding of the area and appreciation of the people who live there. We support a childrens health care project in Huaraz. Please bring with you and second hand or new warm clothes and shoes, which we will distribute to children in the Huaraz area through suitable organizations.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
