the amazing things you'll be doing
A week packed full of included activities that will give you a true taste of life in the Arctic Circle. From driving your own dogsled to building an igloo where the hardy can spend the night, this holiday is truly an experience you won't forget. The accommodation is simple but cosy and appropriate to the wilderness surroundings.

Location:
A few kilometres east of the city of Kiruna are the small settlements of Jukkasjarvi and Kaupinnen. This holiday is based in among the low hills, myriad of frozen lakes and silent pine forests of this large wilderness area.

In the daytime we may see elk, snow grouse and foxes, and at night we have a very good chance of seeing the amazing Northern Lights.

Accommodation
Wilderness lodges provide simple but comfortable dormitory accommodation for 3 nights. The lodges are heated by wood-buring stoves, and there are wood-fired saunas instead of showers. 3 nights are spent in the homebase building in the village of Kaupinnen, with 4-6 people per room, shared facilities, showers and a sauna. 1 night is spent in the icerooms at the famous Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi. Showers, sauna and toilets are in the warm area. Simple but warming food is prepared in the lodges by the tour leader; at the icehotel we eat in an adjacent restaurant.

travellers' tales
The whole trip was a combination of uplifting, exciting, experiences which left us feeling invigorated even after our return home. I particularly enjoyed the dog sledding. (more)
small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

how this holiday makes a difference
The whole ethos of an 'snow' holiday is about promoting lternative versions of winter tourism that use nature in its unspoilt condition, rather than seeking to alter it. We use small villages and family run hotels, chosen for their access to unspoilt mountain terrain, rather than number of lifts and resort facilities.

The popularity of the icehotel has given a boost to winter tourism all over Lapland. Previously areas that relied on their own nationals for winter income are now getting more visits from overseas clients, who stay for longer and spend more money. However most visits to the region are just for a couple of nights over a long weekend, on this trip you stay for a full week helping to provide weekly income from December to April.

We will ensure that our operations do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people so we ensure that our type and scale of tourism is appropriate to local conditions and operate within the limits set by local appropriate infrastructure and carrying capacity. We have teamed up with Friends of Conservation to support projects at Ranthambore, India, Nava Kiran Orphanage, Nepal and on the edge of the Masai Mara, Kenya.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
