the amazing things you'll be doing
An exciting week of winter sports in Europe's 'hot' destination. The eastern extremity of the European Alps is formed by the remarkable Julian Alps, the main mountain area in Slovenia.
This stunningly jagged limestone range has many similarities to the Italian Dolomites; not only is it home to some respectable downhill ski areas, but there is plenty of back-country wilderness terrain, such as the forested Pokljuka plateau. From the picture-postcard lakeside town of Bled with its cliff-top castle, we have access to an excellent variety of valleys and mountains to try out our range of exciting winter sports.
During the week our charming Slovenian instructors and guides will teach us new activities and show us their favourite corners of this very special region.
Optional activities: Downhill skiing at Kranska Gora, Snow biking, Visit to Skocjan Caves.
Accommodation: This popular guesthouse is located in a quiet corner of Bled, 5 minutes walk from the lakeside, with views of the Karavanke mountains to the north. The Pension Berc is run by Luka and his family, who pride themselves on their warm welcome. All 11 rooms have balconies and modern facilities, but the pension retains many of their traditional rural furnishings.

travellers' tales
My highlight was dancing on the tables to a local singing duo's rendition of 80s classics in a Slovenian mountain hut, wearing my pyjamas. (more)

As a part of our continued commitment to responsible tourism, we operate this trip in a way that aims to reduce impacts and to give as much back to the local communities as possible. We work with a locally owned Slovenian agency, and we have worked over the years helped to train their staff and this has included Responsible Tourism training. We also use local leaders and they get additional refresher training on a regular basis. They will also give a short briefing on Responsible Tourism issues on arrival to help you understand the local issues and how you can help. Our leaders in Slovenia are also enrolled at local clubs, these clubs help maintain the environment of the region and have strong policies on environmental issues.
We use all locally owned and run accommodation and this we believe will help contribute directly to the local communities in terms of employment, as well as the use of locally sourced goods and produce. We have limited the group size to 16 to help reduce the environmental impact. We have worked to reduce our carbon footprint at our offices through a reduction of energy use and energy conservation measures. We also actively try to reduce the waste produced by having active reduction and recycling policies in place. We run annual staff workshops on Responsible Tourism. Global warming is a reality and to help you make a difference by reducing the carbon dioxide that is produced when you travel we offer a chance to carbon balance your flights. We encourage all our clients to do this through our web site and do so for all our staff travel. Go on, do your bit! |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
