the amazing things you'll be doing
The Mercantour
Immediately inland of Nice and the Côte d’Azur rise France’s southernmost Alps. Deep valleys cut northwards into the mountains, so the transition from Mediterranean to Alpine, from olive and cistus to pine and gentian, can often be made in a few hours of walking. Our Upland Escape is located towards the western end of the Mercantour massif, on the borders of the Mercantour National Park, where populations of protected species including wolf, bouquetin (ibex) and chamois are carefully monitored. High meadows and turquoise lakes lie at the foot of the 3050m peak of Mont Pelat, rolling Alpine pastures are dotted with ancient hamlets and traditional farms, and mountain streams tumble down pine-cloaked gorges towards the coast.

Explore the area on foot on an independent break, choose to travel whenever you like, and stay as long as you wish (minimum 3 nights). Holidays include comfortable single-centre accommodation in a traditional village, a hire car (carbon offset of course!), breakfast and a Handbook containing masses of local information as well as a wide range of self-guided walks suitable for all abilities and ages (including children). There are no fixed itineraries – you are free to walk as much or as little as you like.

'No-frills' trip – includes en-suite B&B, hire car, Handbook of self-guided walks and local information.

Walking
Short walks include strolls through alpine meadows, spectacular view points above the Var, and the extraordinary red rock of the Daluis gorge. Medium length circuits take in aromatic woodland, tiny, traditional hamlets perched high on both sides of the valley, and the epic Barlatte gorge, complete with its water mill, still capable of grinding local flour. Full day walks reach the high grassland pass of Col des Champs, beneath the rock pinnacles of the Aiguilles (Needles) de Pelens; or a hidden valley deep in the National Park, often home to a herd of chamois. Also noted are the best opportunities for 'messing about in the river': pools and paddling places in the Var and its tributaries.
village and accommodation
Saint Martin d’Entraunes is set on a rise above the broad riverbed in the High Var Valley at 1018m altitude. The surrounding fields and meadows are bordered by wooded slopes which climb to high ledges of summer grazing, above which the rocky peaks of the mountains stand majestic. Behind the quiet façade of the village, narrow alleys reveal charming houses and the pretty 13th century church with its separate bell-tower contains a fine Renaissance altarpiece. The pretty, 10-roomed, 2 star Hotel La Vallière is set at the entrance of the village, with horses often grazing the meadows around the property. The simply furnished rooms are all en-suite, light and airy. There is a restaurant and bar, a terrace, and across the street is the village boules court.

Children under 2 years old free. Children aged 2-11 years old: 25% discount.
Family groups and parties of friends – book a group of 6 people or more and one of you will receive a completely FREE holiday! (conditions apply).

how this holiday makes a difference
One of the main factors in choosing the location is the village in which we stay. It is our aim to seek out small communities where traditional ways of life survive, although they are often on the retreat. Our intention is to bring new income and impetus to the community – without overwhelming it! Our guests enjoy learning about the environment and culture, and the locals benefit both economically, and from the knowledge that their way of life is valued.

St Martin d’Entraunes has just 89 inhabitants but supports an excellent village butcher who also sells fresh bread and a few basic supplies, and which we recommend as a good source for packed lunch ingredients.

The Hotel La Vallière is at the heart of village life, and we provide valuable business during the otherwise quiet spring and autumn months.

The Mercantour National Park lies just beyond the village and contains some 2,000 plant species, hundreds of animal species and the largest high altitude lake in Europe. Our Handbook will give tips on how to enjoy the Park without damaging it, and how you might find flowers such as alpine columbine or lady's slipper, or spot some of the park’s wild inhabitants, the chamois and marmots.

The Var Valley contains a few small local enterprises offering organised activities such as canoeing and white-water rafting which we encourage our travellers to enjoy, and we highly recommend a visit to the fascinating museum at Guillaumes which helps explain the traditional mountain ways of life in the region.

During the summer months, there are locally organised events in which we encourage client support and participation. Keep a look out for the scarecrow festival!

All our car hire is “carbon-offset”: carbon emissions are fully offset through a scheme in place with the Carbon Neutral Company. Our brochure production and distribution is also carbon compensated through a similar scheme, and we offer all our clients the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions caused by their flights too. We encourage and arrange train travel and also provide details on how this holiday can easily be reached by train, thereby avoiding flying altogether. Our brochure and all other literature and correspondence uses recycled paper, and we operate a rigorous recycling and energy saving policy both at our UK office and all our destinations, as well as encouraging our local suppliers to do the same.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
