introduction to Southern Africa overland tour
The tour visits 4 countries and is action packed from the 1st day!
After spending a day in Cape Town visiting Table Mountain and the peninsula, the tour hugs the west coast of South Africa and moves through to Namibia. In Namibia the tour goes past the Fish River Canyon, Sossusvlei and Sesriem, before stopping off at Swakopmund. A day of leisure in Swakopmund allows participants to partake in numerous adventure activities ranging from sky-diving to flights over the dunes, and not to mention the world famous quad biking in the dunes.
After Swakopmund, the tour moves slowly up towards Etosha Pan, where 3 days are spent on safari in this desolate landscape. One of the highlights of the tour is sitting at the floodlit waterholes at night watching the wide assortment of African animals drinking in the cool of the night. After Etosha and spending time with the Himba people, the tour moves through the Caprivi Strip to the Okavango Delta where we will go on a mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) cruise at sunset, witnessing the prolific animal and bird life.
After spending time in this natural wildlife sanctuary, we will move onto Victoria Falls, the most spectacular sight in Africa (and arguably the most beautiful in the world). 2 days are spent in this adventure capital of Africa allowing participants to partake in activities such as bunjee jumping, elephant rides, white water rafting etc. Should you choose, you may end the tour on day 18 in Livingston/Victoria Falls, or continue to Johannesburg for a further 3 days. Thereafter we make our way South past Makgadikgadi pans to the mighty Limpopo river. The tour ends upon our arrival in Johannesburg on day 21.Cape Town, Table Mountain & the Cape of Good Hope. Fish River Canyon. Walking in the giant dunes of Sossusvlei and the Namib Desert. Optional activities in Swakopmund. Rock engravings in Twyfelfontein. Visit of a traditional Himba village. Game drives & night observation of animals at waterholes in Etosha National Park. Bushmen experience at Tsumeb. Mokoro excursion on the Okavango River. Game drive and boat excursion on the Kwando River and Caprivi Game Reserve. 2 nights in Livingstone/ Victoria Falls. Game viewing cruise on the Chobe River. Sunset on Makgadikgadi Pans.

|
On these tours we utilise local staff, campsites and excursions based in the countries we visit. Much of this revenue goes into the surrounding communities and creates employment in often very rural, remote and impoverished areas. Other than tourism there is little other prospects of employment in these areas. In Namibia we visit local Himba and Bushman communities with the proceeds directly benefiting the communities. Local guides are used for Bushmen excursions in Twyfelfontein and Tsumeb areas. In the Caprivi area we visit a traditional Caprivi Village (Lizuali Village) where utilise a local guide and purchase local weaving products. This area was previously affected by war so this is much needed support for their rehabilitation. We try to minimize our impact on the environment by utilising sustainable practises and always being aware of the impact we are having on the environment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
