the amazing things you'll be doing
Too often tourism develops with little regard to the needs of local people and the environment. Communities in Thailand however are increasingly taking control of their futures and ensuring tourism development has a positive impact on their homes and communities. We'll be helping one community do just that, as well as touring this beautiful country.
Bangkok to Khao Sok National Park: We start in the bustling capital, Bangkok, where we visit the Grand Palace and glittering temples of the Emerald and Reclining Buddhas, before taking an overnight sleeper train to Surat Thani. From here we drive to Khao Sok National Park.
Khao Sok is one of the oldest and most biodiverse rainforests in SE Asia, where waterfalls tumble over soaring limestone cliffs and vines drape mysteriously from the canopy of ancient forest. We wake to the sound of the jungle and explore on foot and elephant back.
Prom Lok Homestay & Community Work: Continuing to Prom Lok, situated on the edge of the Khao Luang National Park, we meet the families with whom we will share a home for the next 5 days. The park boasts over 300 species of orchid and an array of birdlife and mammals, including macaque, musk deer and civet. In this developing destination, we'll be working with the local community to build the vital infrastructure needed to ensure tourism is sustainable. This may involve developing the visitor centre and its resources, clearing trails or running workshops with local people. We spend our last few days on the tropical island of Koh Samui where we can kayak, take a cookery course or simply relax on white sand beaches.
Price includes 7 night hotel, 5 nights homestay, overnight train, 12 breakfasts, 6 lunches & 5 dinners. Transport is by bus, train, boat and on foot. Group size is approx 12 to 16 plus tour leader, drivers, boatmen project staff and some local guides.

a taste of volunteering trip - what's it all about?
This type of trip is ideal for people who are unable to take very long periods off work but who are interested in volunteering to work with communities in need, or in wildlife conservation. These shorter trips combine volunteering with an opportunity to see the main sights in destinations. Find out more about 'taste of volunteering'how this holiday makes a difference
The trip will provide a fantastic living, learning experience of Thai family and local community life, as well as being a fun, authentic experience. We are supporting an emerging community based tourism initiative, helping them to develop a sustainable business and to conserve their natural heritage. Our volunteer activities are at the request of the community to enable them to develop their business. During the touring part of our trip, we use locally owned suppliers and tour leaders, ensuring our visit delivers the maximum economic benefit from tourism. As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
