Painting Holidays with a Personal Touch
Based in the typical white Andalusian pueblo of Torrox, some 50 km east of Malaga, we offer painting holidays for small groups (maximum 10 people) of all standards and experience.
The aim of this workshop is for participants to immerse themselves in the process of drawing and painting in mixed media and so to discover a personal interpretation of the beautiful Andalusian landscape. Use of colour, application of brush marks, surface texture and balance of composition will be explored to convey a sense of mood and place in resolved paintings. Brief, informative slide lectures will be given on artists such as Braque, Matisse, Diebenkorn, Rae and others, used as guiding lights for participants. This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience. Our objective is to improve your technique, regardless of your starting point. Our resident professional artist, Anna Martin, will provide you with expert advice and commentary on your work, and introduce you to new techniques to enhance your skills.
Our holidays are about discovering the hidden Spain, including the scenery, flora and fauna, architecture and culture.
Accommodation: Full board, delicious local food with wine, double, twin and single bedrooms in charming village houses.
We provide: easels, drawing boards and lightweight folding chairs. Paper & canvasses are available for sale at cost when you arrive. We ask you to bring paints and brushes - Anna will be happy to discuss equipment with you before you leave.
Sample programme
Workshop I: June 29 - July 6 Exploring process; Mixed Media Drawing and Painting
The aim of this workshop is for participants to immerse themselves in the process of drawing and painting in mixed media and so to discover a personal interpretation of the beautiful Andalucian landscape.
Workshop II: July 21-28
New participants: Same course outline as Workshop I.
Repeat participants: The course will also cover a more in depth approach to the techniques explored in week 1 (Workshop I). Furthermore, they will be encouraged and assisted to explore a more personal style and focus on the use of the medium of their choice.
Teaching method:
Anna teaches in acrylics mainly but also in other media as required. She concentrates on landscape painting but also offers other subjects to paint, ranging from still life and flowers to figures or chosen objects.
She emphasises how to capture the excitement on first spotting a subject, without technicalities bogging you down. She gives attention to 'wet-in-wet' technique as well as to some of the classical precepts.
These painting holidays are suitable for all - from absolute beginners to accomplished painters. Groups are kept small so you can visibly advance within the week and draw from Anna’s wealth of experience, skills, and thought-provoking insights.
Her daily demonstrations help you get started. They also address established techniques and commonly-encountered problems such as perspective, colour density, recession, and so on.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
We recognise that the environment, the community and the culture within which we operate and our relationship with local organisations, businesses and individuals is vital to the success of our business. We operate in an area which has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe – around 30%, particularly during the winter months as many of the jobs available are seasonal for the duration of the summer tourist season. We are very pleased therefore that we have been able to provide economic support for our local community by bringing business to the local economy during the winter months.
70% of our turnover is spent in local businesses and our clients spend money in the village as well. We use locally owned and run accommodation by preference and promote the local heritage, architecture, culture and gastronomy of our region wherever we can. We aim to where possible purchase our equipment and food from locally produced sources. We support our local farmers by using local produce in season wherever we can and use local guide services. We support local income generation and small business enterprises by supporting locally owned shops and restaurants. We have encouraged the local olive oil Co-operativa de Nuestra Senora de la Nieves to inform clients about production of virgin olive oil through guided tours of the production facility. We encourage the production of local crafts & produce by marketing to our customers – eg vino del terreno, pottery and ceramica, virgin olive oil, avocado oil products. Our guides are steeped in local knowledge and are able to show people how not to disturb local flora & fauna. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
