the amazing things you'll be doing
This Laos and Vietnam holiday enables you to experience a truly unique overland journey. We start in Luang Prabang, the former royal capital of Laos, nestled on the banks of the Mekong. Today this pretty town is a designated World Heritage Site. From here we begin our spectacular overland journey to Vietnam, stopping first to explore the mysterious ‘Plain of Jars’, hundreds of stone jars scattered across the area. Our next stop is Vieng Xai Caves, a vast network of underground caverns which was home to over 20,000 people during the Indochina War around 35 years ago. The cave and this area has only just opened up to tourists and here you have the unique opportunity to stay in luxury ‘Africa Safari’ style tents right at the cave site itself. The journey to the Vietnamese border takes in some fantastic limestone karst scenery, and in Vietnam we explore Mai Chau, home to many ethnic groups, and an ideal base for trekking or cycling. The capital of Hanoi is explored in detail, before we finally finish off with a luxurious boat cruise on Halong Bay. All in all an unforgettable and totally unique trip that you will not find anywhere else.

All our tours include private modern air-conditioned transport and private knowledgeable local guides, who will give you a personal and unique take on this beautiful and fascinating region.

Please note that this is a tailor made tour, so any changes you wish to make to the suggested itinerary can be made, to suit your exact requirements.

Best time to go: October - March.

travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
We are a local Indochina operator, and by booking through our company you can be rest assured that the profits are going directly to the countries you are visiting and helping the people in Laos and Vietnam.

We are committed to ecotourism and responsible tourism in Laos and actively seek to research and promote projects that will benefit the local community and environment, as well as being a thoroughly enjoyable experience for you.

We also aim to encourage tourism throughout Laos, particularly in poor rural areas, and ensure that it is the local villagers that benefit every time. We have a strong desire to protect the local environment and therefore encourage tours around respected eco lodges with strong environmental policies as much as possible, and also educate our guides and staff on the importance of being environmentally friendly, both in the office and for the guides, on the ground. Within our offices in Laos we work to a ‘paperless desk’ policy where possible and only use recycled paper if required. For this trip, as we are visiting a lot of remote villages, we recommend a visit to the ‘Big Brother Mouse’ shop, a Lao owned project that publishes books designed to make reading fun for Lao children. We as a company support this project, and have funded the publication of one of their books. Once you have purchased these books, they can be distributed amongst the many villages on the way.

Laos holds the unwanted title of ‘the most heavily bombed country on the Earth’ and for this reason we support and encourage a visit to the MAG (Mines Advisory Group) Exhibition Centre in Phonsavan. This project highlights the good work that MAG have done, and continue to do in Laos, clearing mines in poor rural areas. Contributions to this project can be made if you so wish.

From an environmental perspective, our safari camping adventure at Vieng Xai follows a strict policy. We use specially imported environmental toilets and solar heated hot showers which help to maintain our ‘leave no trace’ policy. The local community is also supported as a percentage of this excursion goes directly back to the local villagers.

In a similar vein, the accommodation at Mai Chau Lodge follows sustainable tourism guidelines in the running of the lodge, this includes training and education of local people – offering hospitality and trade skills to the local community and ensuring that 100% of the staff employed at the lodge are local. The lodge also benefits the environment by planting native trees in and around Mai Chau.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
