introduction to Horse Riding across the Andes
Cross the Andes on horseback from the Argentine Pampa to Chilean Lakes. Ride beautiful Criollo cross horses in the company of expert guides.
Enjoy spectacular and varied scenery - from dry grasslands to volcanoes, forests and lakes - and get to know the equine culture of the region as you ride with gauchos and huasos in support.
| Day 1: | Arrive & settle at ranch. Arrive at Argentina’s San Martín de los Andes airport and transfer to the estancia for lunch and a familiarisation ride. Sleep in a cottage on the farm. (L,D) |
| Day 2: | Explore the estancia. Today you ride all day on the Estancia. Stop for a traditional "asado" (lamb roast over an open fire) lunch. Enjoy views of the Andes on the ride, you need to be a confident and practiced rider. (B,L,D) |
| Day 3: | Ride the Andean Steppes. Set out from the Estancia towards Chile. Cross the wide open spaces of Argentine Patagonia. Spend up to 8 hours in the saddle. Camp tonight, eat around the campfire and wash in the stream. (B,L,D) |
| Day 4: | Ride the Andean Steppes. Ride across rivers, through Indian reservations, over ridges and through magnificent gorges as you head towards the high mountains and the Chilean border. Camp tonight under the stars of the Southern hemisphere. (B,L,D) |
| Day 5: | Ride the Andean Steppes. Continue through Argentine Patagonia towards the border. The weather becomes warmer and the landscape begins to change from grassland to forests and lakes. (B,L,D) |
| Day 6: | Ride the Andean Steppes. The towering snow-capped peak of Lanin Volcano serves as a beacon on the ride today. Lanin is half in Chile and half in Argentina, where waters melt and run to the Pacific is considered Chile, where they run to the Atlantic is Argentina. (B,L,D) |
| Day 7: | Cross the border. You reach the Argentine/Chilean border today. Here you are met by your Chilean hosts and change horses. Set off at a relaxed pace down the western slopes of the Andes. (B,L,D) |
| Day 8: | Volcanoes and steep terrain. Ride all day through forests, passing lakes in the shadow of the high Andes. Finally, ride down towards the Chilean town of Pucón. Arrive at a very comfortable hot-springs hotel to celebrate your journey and soak in hot springs. (B,L,D) |
| Day 9: | Relax & ride. Morning to relax and soak in the thermal pools. Drive back to Argentina and your last night on the estancia. (B,L,D) |
| Day 10: | Return home. Morning ride before your afternoon flight to Buenos Aires and on home. (B,L,D) |

Enjoy a truly amazing variety of landscapes – monkey-puzzle forests, active volcanoes and glacial lakes. Learn about the cowboy culture from huasos & gauchos. Unique scenery, charming people, great food and a fun, informal atmosphere. The horses we use are the best bred and cared for in the area. The founders all met in Chile and have an unrivalled passion for the country. We work in very close partnership with a large number of micro-businesses (hotels, drivers, restaurants, boats, stables, etc) to deliver an experience that is both unique and sustainable.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
