the amazing things you'll be doing
We are a wilderness adventure company in the Canadian Rocky Mountains that specializes in hiking and backpacking to spectacular wilderness areas, with so much more. Our secluded trips are environmentally sensitive and provide a unique opportunity to enjoy great scenery and abundant wildlife, while discovering and learning about the plants and animals. Part of the uniqueness of our trips is our nature awareness activities based on Canadian First Nations aboriginal teachings and seeing the wilderness through native eyes. Guests will learn to identify common plants and tracks, taste some of the delicious vegetation, learn some wilderness skills, or in some programs even take part in powerful and authentic native ceremonies with a native elder.

We work on secluded trails, as well as National Park trails, with every trip offering spectacular views. Other activities to enjoy with us include rafting, mountain biking, and fishing.

Our programs are based out of the remote wilderness lodge, Cross River Cabins, which is located in the backcountry of the Rocky Mountains just south of Banff, Lake Louise, and Banff National Park. Our packages are designed to offer individuals and small groups a safe, unique, and enjoyable wilderness experience, with a bonus of educational and cultural learning. Meals, accommodations, activity costs, certified guides, and transportation from Banff are all included in our prices as noted.

A Brush with Nature CA $1075 - CA $1195
4 days total; Lodge/cabin accommodation multi-sport package - guided interpretive day trips, all-inclusive: mountain biking and/or hiking; river rafting.

The Kootenay River valley was the destination for the first ever recorded journey for pleasure through the Canadian Rocky Mountains in 1841. We created this package with this pleasurable spirit in mind. It offers the adventurous traveler, new to the area, or not, some exciting and varied wilderness experiences. We will be mountain biking along ridges overlooking the Kootenay and Cross River valleys, with a few surprises along the way; river rafting some exciting stretches of whitewater on one of the nearby rivers ranging from grade 1 to 4; hiking up to a lofty mountain ridge with spectacular views of peaks all around, including the "Matterhorn of the Rockies", Mt. Assiniboine; and all with the opportunity to learn a bit about the history, geology, wildlife, and culture of the area along the way.

River expedition CA $950 - CA $1055
5 days total; 2 nights Cabin accommodation at the lodge and 2 nights tent accommodation along the river; guide, meals, and equipment.

This package is a three-day whitewater rafting expedition on the Kootenay River. The Kootenay is one of Canada’s foremost tripping rivers, with its unparalleled mix of languorous sections of spectacular scenery and exciting sections of whitewater rapids. With our certified guides and experienced wilderness program leaders, this journey will also contain many other experiences that the river will add to. Interesting nature interpretation activities based on traditional First Nations teachings; evenings around the campfire with laughs, stories, music, and camaraderie; and a fun way to connect with the natural world are all possibilities for this trip. Journeying along the Kootenay River has long been an activity of many people in this region for thousands of years. The Kootenay once staged expeditions for food, for relationships, for war, for peace, and for money. In this package, you will get to experience this river on an expedition of your own through this unforgettable wilderness.

Mountain Magic CA $1256 - CA $1395
6 Days Total; Lodge/Cabin accommodations - guided interpretive day trips, all-inclusive: Day hike immersion trips into the beauty of nature; cultural and wilderness activities, based on native teachings.

From the white-tipped peaks in June and the rainbows of wildflowers in July, to the bright leaves and salmon runs of September, this package is simply a collection of great day excursions into this beautiful wilderness. Your warm days will be made up of exciting day hikes to many remote and secluded wilderness locations, and your cooler nights will be spent at our remote wilderness lodge accommodation by a lively campfire, or soaking in our atmospheric outdoor, wood-fired, hot tub enjoying the surrounding mountain-views. All of the hikes will include spectacular scenery that could include pristine alpine lakes, colorful meadows, and great mountain-top views overlooking rugged valleys, with many possible wildlife viewing opportunities. Interpretive activities based on native teachings will also enhance your experiences along the way as we make the most of this mountain playground on low-impact, eco-sensitive, and fun adventures in remote natural settings.
travellers' tales
It was all so memorable from sleeping out in a thunder & lightning storm, swimming in an alpine lake, reaching amazing view points, bumping into a grizzly bear, bathing in natural hot springs, hiking a glacier, white water rafting, participating in a native sweat lodge....gosh I think we done it all! (more)
how this holiday makes a difference
Each of our wilderness packages are more than an adventure, they are a cultural and educational experience. You will be more than explorers and adventurers, you will be challenged and encouraged to expand both physically and mentally. Along side our standard adventure and nature activities, such as hiking, whitewater rafting, and mountain biking, your visit could include various other enlightening and humbling experiences, encouraging us to be stewards and caretakers of the land and better understand our place on Mother Earth:
  • special guests and speakers
  • wilderness skills training
  • navigation and map reading training
  • learning with native elders
  • storytellers of native and mountain life and legend
  • backpacking skills
  • First Nations craft sessions
  • singers/musicians
  • interpretive talks on geology, history, culture, or wildlife
  • environmental immersion sessions encouraging a closer connection with nature
Whether at our picturesque lodge setting or at a cozy camp in the backcountry, our trips offer guests the unique opportunity to be remote in nature. We are not on the sides of any busy highways, nor adjacent to any crowded cities, and use this incredible gift in today’s world to learn from, and empower, rejuvenate, and inspire us. Much of our focus is on balancing personal comfort with amazing natural experiences that you can’t get in the city, or even in the busier parts of the Rocky Mountains. While providing personal comfort, we are also continually gifted to be in the wild with the sweet smells of the wildflowers in the forest, the sound of the nearby trickling creek, the breathtaking mountain views all around, and the momentous chance sightings of the abundant wildlife, including bears, deer, elk, cougars, and marmots.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
