the amazing things you'll be doing
At last, South Africa has an adventure packed volunteer project, and it is now easily within your grasp. Choose between 3 different projects all situated on a private safari reserve boasting abundant wildlife and extremely comfortable accommodation. Volunteers will have the opportunity to cover a wide variety of activities including elephant rides (as well as sleeping in the elephant “boma” with these gentle giants), tours to un-spoilt beaches in Mozambique and Kruger National Park, lion tracking and game viewing from microlights.
This project has been skillfully created to give volunteers a holistic experience covering cultural, environmental and adventure aspects. If you are looking for a safari holiday with a difference, this is for you. Adventure from the first day and fun, worthwhile activities will ensure that your time at the project is unforgettable.
Highlights of this project include:
Tracking lions in the open with a carnivore expert African elephant tracking and interaction with orphaned elephants Conducting a game count from the air in a microlight aircraft Darting and capturing of a rogue lion Helping a vet to remove an Impala from a snare Learning how to handle a 4X4 vehicle in the bush Going out with our anti-poaching patrol Tagging and release of live raptors
Our programs are fun, educational, highly varied and at times challenging; where participation adds to the sustainability of the reserve as a whole. Choose from a variety of placement durations to suit your needs.

a day in a life of a volunteer
Although life on an African safari park is never certain as unexpected activities constantly arise (we cannot control the wild animals), the average day for a volunteer would begin with a relaxing breakfast. Thereafter we will either go and do some conservation work in the bush, or spend the day on a tour to surrounding tourist destinations. Each day brings with it new experiences and opportunities for the volunteers, and we encourage volunteers to take full advantage of these opportunities. The evenings are spent in the comfortable accommodations reflecting on the day's activities and planning the following days tours/adventures. volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference

There is no other, similar project which educates volunteers into the importance of sustainable tourism and conservation. All the work which participants of this course undertake has a huge significance in conservation. We strongly feel that by educating volunteers beforehand as to the importance of the tasks we set for them, they will be able to gain a deeper insight into the importance of their work, and ultimately a strong sense of self-satisfaction.
Our safari park works closely with the surrounding community, creating jobs and providing many households with a needy source of income. Where possible, we employ people from the surrounding community. Chefs, hotel staff, guides, trackers etc, are all employed from the local community. By training these people in various aspects, they are able to further train and educate other people. Our other community orientated activities include assisting with painting of houses, education and sustainable community gardens. We are also hoping to establish an AIDS orphanage in the community, thereby helping many orphans deal with the trauma of losing one, and sometimes two parents. Volunteers who show a keen interest in the surrounding community may get the opportunity to spend large amounts of time in the community schools, hospitals, community projects, or in any other sphere which the volunteer feels most needed. Another aspect which volunteers will get hands on experience with, is our domesticated elephants. Some elephants originated from Zimbabwe and were saved from a culling operation. Domesticated African elephants cannot return to the wild and need constant care which our game reserve is able to provide. As part of the profile and long term vision, the aim of the operation is to provide the constructive utilization of these elephants. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
