introduction to Photography

This is a trip for photo-enthusiasts in manual SLR photography, who have little or no experience of photography beyond the snapshots.

It caters for those who seek to develop their basic camera skills with like-minded people in a beautiful, vibrant and cultural environment.

This trip aims to guide you into exploring creative picture-taking techniques, so you can take home photographs that you are proud of and a travel experience you will remember. Alexandra Murphy, who will lead the workshops, lived in South Africa for 17 years and travelled extensively through its varied landscapes.

She teaches photography workshops at home in the UK for beginners and intermediate photographers providing opportunities to improve their photography skills.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrival at Cape Town airport & transfer to Lady Victoria guesthouse – your base for the week. This Guesthouse is an authentic and original Victorian townhouse on the quiet streets of suburban Cape Town. It is about 10 minutes drive from both the city centre and the famous beaches of Camps Bay with their seafront restaurants. It was built in 1902 and is tastefully decorated with antiques from the era. Bedrooms are large and comfortable with en-suite bathrooms. The guesthouse has a relaxing lounge at the front of the property, a private garden with a pleasant patio and swimming pool for a refreshing dip. In the evening you will meet Alexandra Murphy. This first workshop will include discussion of objectives, detailed programme and slide presentation of styles.
Day 2:Morning photo workshop: Revise camera functions: Light metering, camera handling. Look at location/documentary/portraiture techniques. Slide presentation illustrating methods and styles. Afternoon: Cape Town city & township tour.
Day 3:Morning photo workshop: Assess day 2 images and set new individual objectives. Natural light, using filters for mood, compositional techniques. Slide show on landscapes & nature. Afternoon: Cape Peninsula tour.
Day 4:Morning: Robben Island tour. Evening photo workshop: Assess day 3 images and set new individual objectives. Slide show on flash & low light photography & colour temperature. Evening: Night shoot in Cape Town
Day 5:All day Winelands tour. All day shoot under guidance exploring light, filters, composition, landscape and wine!
Day 6:Morning photo workshop: Assess Winelands’ photos. Free afternoon or optional trip up Table Mountain under guidance.
Day 7:Morning photo workshop: Final assessment and discussion of images produced. Possibly photography exhibition visit. Afternoon airport transfer back to Cape Town airport in time for your return flight home or onwards travel arrangements.
how this holiday makes a difference
With this trip people do not only improve their photography skills, they also discover the beauty of South Africa’s landscapes and its colourful people through their camera lens. This will hopefully accomplish a greater understanding of South Africa’s problems and its achievements to date.

Township, Robben Island & Cape Peninsula tours provide vital revenue for e.g. clean water supplies and education for some of the country’s poorest residents. As well as a visit to Buitenverwachting in Klein Constantia, a family run vineyard, whose operations immediately benefit the local community and workforce.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
